BY WHAT AUTHORITY…?

Matthew 21:23-27

“He guides the humble in what is right, and teaches them his way.”

Psalm 25:9

After throwing out the merchants from the Temple, the authorities interrogated him publicly: “By what authority are you doing these things?” As he so often did in the gospels, Jesus elegantly eludes the question, which was insincere, and counterattacks with the question about John’s baptism.  In other words, with respect to John himself, was his authority from heaven or from men?

It is a crucial distinction, which unmasks the high priests and the elders of the people.

There are times when something similar can happen to us with God.  Oftentimes in the hard experience of a funeral or an illness I am asked:  Why does God allow this?  It is basically the same question as in the gospel:  Who gave God the authority over life and death, over me and over my loved ones?  Who does he think he is?  Such brutally asked questions, which could even sound blasphemous, are essentially those which arise out of our arrogance, out of not allowing God to be God.  We are doubting whether or not “the Lord is good and righteous” in truth, and whether, in spite of our rebelliousness, “his tenderness and his mercy are eternal”.

Even today, God can surprise you with a radical question.  What will be your response?

Prayer: Teach me to walk in your truth, because you are my God and Savior

Después de expulsar a los mercaderes del Templo, las autoridades le interpelan en público: “¿con qué autoridad haces esto?”. Jesús, como tantas veces en el evangelio, elude elegantemente la cuestión, que no era sincera, y contraataca con la pregunta sobre el bautismo de Juan, o sea, sobre la persona misma del Bautista: ¿hay que considerarlo como del cielo o de los hombres?

Es una disyuntiva crucial, que desenmascara a los sumos sacerdotes y ancianos del pueblo.

En ocasiones a nosotros con Dios nos puede pasar algo parecido. Muchas veces en la dura experiencia de los funerales o la enfermedad me preguntan: ¿Por qué Dios permite esto? En el fondo es la misma pregunta del evangelio ¿Quién le ha dado a Dios autoridad sobre la vida y la muerte, sobre mí o sobre mis seres queridos? ¿Quién se cree que es? Estas preguntas presentadas tan descarnadamente, y que pueden sonar a blasfemas son, en el fondo, las que surgen de nuestra soberbia, de no dejar a Dios ser Dios. Dudamos si realmente “el Señor es bueno y recto” y que, a pesar de nuestras rebeliones, “su ternura y su misericordia son eternas”.

Hoy mismo, Dios puede sorprenderte con una pregunta radical. ¿Cuál va a ser tu respuesta?

Oración: Enséñame a caminar en tu verdad, pues tú eres mi Dios y Salvador.
