SAVE THE INNOCENT

Matthew 2:13-18

“He dealt craftily with our race,

and forced our ancestors to abandon their infants

so that they would die.”

Acts 7:19

In Spanish-speaking countries, the popular tradition exists of celebrating the day of the innocents each 28^th of December, and many people use it to make jokes with others, appealing to the naiveté and lack of cunning which are characteristics of innocence among children.

But this popular tradition isn’t derived from anything remotely amusing. It owes its inspiration to the slaughter of children attributed to King Herod the Great, concerning which the historians disagree as to whether it happened or not. What is quite certain is that because of the cruelty of that king, Jesus and his family were compelled to flee to Egypt.

This passage shows us that oppressors are not concerned with the damage they can inflict, including killing innocent children, with the aim of maintaining power and control. They also feel a consuming fear, because the justice gestating among the people will rise up at any unforeseeable moment. Today, many innocents continue to suffer: entire towns dying of hunger, suffering abandonment, repression by those who have and wield power. Another evil of our times is the corruption which impedes the equal distribution of goods among all.

But then, we hold the hope that the Savior who has been born to us may come to our assistance.

Prayer: Lord, free us from the oppressors, who for their lust of power inflict such sufferings.

En los países hispanohablantes existe la tradición popular de celebrar, cada 28 de diciembre, el día de los inocentes, y muchas personas lo utilizan para gastar bromas con los demás, apelando a la ingenuidad y a la falta de picardía que son característicos de la inocencia propia de los niños.

Pero esta tradición popular no tiene en su génesis nada de gracioso. La inspiración se debe a una matanza de niños que se atribuye al rey Herodes I el Grande, sobre la cual los historiadores no están de acuerdo si ocurrió o no. Lo que sí es muy cierto es que por la crueldad de aquel rey, Jesús y su familia tuvieron que huir a Egipto.

Este pasaje nos muestra que a los opresores no les importa el daño que puedan ocasionar, incluso matando a niños inocentes, con tal de mantener el poder y la dominación. Sienten también un terrible miedo porque en cualquier momento nacerá la justicia que se está gestando en los pueblos. Hoy, muchos inocentes siguen padeciendo: poblaciones enteras muriendo de hambre, sufriendo el abandono, la represión por parte de los que tienen y ejercen el poder. Otro mal de nuestro tiempo es la corrupción que impide que los bienes sean distribuidos entre todos. Pero también tenemos la esperanza de que el Salvador que nos ha nacido venga en socorro nuestro.

Oración: Señor, líbranos de los opresores que ocasionan tantos sufrimientos con su afán de poder.
