AND IN THE MEANTIME...?

JOHN 20:31

“The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

Acts 11:26

A state leader, now deceased, declared to a journalist: “I was born a Christian, will probably die one.  However, in the meantime…?

He undoubtedly meant that he had been born into a practicing family, that he’d been baptized, and that at the time of his funeral he would probably receive a religious burial ceremony, but that in between those two events, he would lead his life as he pleased.  And this is how many people see things. But is this really what it means to be a Christian?

If we turn to the Bible, the Word of God, we don’t see anywhere that one becomes a Christian through heredity or culture, nor that one becomes one through the act of being baptized, of attending church services or mass, or even by leading an irreproachable life. No, being an authentic Christian means being a disciple of Jesus Christ.

In order to become one, there is a two-fold condition:  first, one must acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; secondly, that his death and resurrection permit us to be reconciled with God. It is a new spiritual birth and the point of departure of a new life, of a personal relationship with God. He makes each one of us into a different person, transformed, having found a meaning to one’s life.  It is also important to follow this pathway of discipleship that Jesus has shown us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for our sins.  Help me to serve you each day with love and humility and to follow your example.  In your name we pray. Amen.

“Y a los discípulos se les llamó cristianos

por primera vez en Antioquía”

Hechos 11:26

Un jefe de estado, ya  fallecido, declaraba a un periodista: “Nací cristiano, probablemente moriré como tal. Pero ¿entretanto...?”

Sin dudas,  quería decir que había nacido en una familia  practicante, había sido bautizado, y que en su entierro probablemente se celebraría un oficio religioso, pero entre esos dos acontecimientos, viviría como le convenía. Y  esta es la manera de ver de muchas personas.  ¿Pero es verdaderamente esto ser cristianos y cristianas?

Si nos remitimos a la Biblia, la Palabra de Dios, no vemos en ninguna parte que uno sea cristiano por herencia o por cultura, ni que alguien llegue a serlo por el hecho de estar bautizados, de asistir a cultos o misas, o aun por llevar una vida irreprochable. No, ser un cristiano auténtico es ser discípulo de Jesucristo.

Para llegar a serlo, hace falta una doble condición: por una  parte reconocer que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios; y por otra parte, que su muerte y resurrección me permiten estar reconciliados con Dios. Es un  nuevo nacimiento espiritual y el punto de partida de una nueva vida, de una relación personal con Dios. Él hace de cada uno de nosotros una persona diferente, transformada, quien halla un sentido a su vida. Es importante además, seguir ese camino de discipulado que Jesús nos mostró.

Oración: Señor Jesús, Gracias por morir por nuestros pecados. Ayúdame a servirte cada día con amor y humildad y a seguir tu ejemplo. En tu nombre oramos. Amén,
