Transfiguration of the Lord

A FACE OF LIGHT
MATTHEW 17:1-8

“and he was transfigured before them;
 and his face shone like the sun;
and his garments became as white as light.”
Matthew 17:2

We are all aware of the importance light has in our lives. We often only think about this when we’re in the middle of a blackout; but Jesus’ light, which is described in this text, is different than this world’s light. Jesus’ light evokes the people’s liberation and the prophet’s deliverance from expectation. The text says that Jesus’ face shone like the sun, and I have always taken this phrase as an invitation to glow, to radiate warmth amid the coldness of our world.

In the text, to shine is not understood in the sense that our light may leave others blind, rather in the sense that our faces – like that of Jesus – may radiate that light capable of transforming lives and give testimony to the God of love. A light through which God manifests himself and shows his pleasure.

At times, like the disciples, we fear God’s light because it reveals the most obscure corners of our being; but again, Jesus is right there, drawing near, raising us from the ground, touching us, and illuminating us more than ever.

Let us make good use of that light without fear; and let us share it with all those who need it.

Prayer:  God of light, we are overcome before your mystery. Let your light flood out upon us so that we may be able to share a little of that light with all those who are in need. In the glorious name of your Son. Amen.

Transfiguración del Señor

UN ROSTRO DE LUZ
MATEO 17:1-8
