JESUS IS MY SOVEREIGN KING
ACTS
4:23-31
“And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,
the most exalted of
the kings of the earth.”
Psalm 89: 27
With
nostalgia I remember that hymn, which I haven’t sung for some time now: “Jesus
is my sovereign king.” I like it as much
for its lyrics as for its music.
Perhaps
for some people it may seem obsolete in our times to speak of the concept of a
God who is like a sovereign or king.
There are
few remaining governments led by kings or sovereigns, and those that do remain
are more symbolic than real. But there is a reality, by whatever name we may
give it: that our God is the most sublime, as the Psalmist reminds us.
One of the
greatest postulates of the Protestant Reformation was precisely this concept of
God’s sovereignty. There is no human, institution, or anything that can occupy
that position. The human being of our times is subject to numerous temptations
of sovereignty: the sovereignty of fashion, of parties, of money, of sex, etc. None
of these in and of themself is evil; the evil comes when we make them gods.
Prayer: Father, teach me to recognize you as my king
and Lord. Forgive me when I offend you with my actions, by putting the mission
which you have entrusted to me last in the list of my priorities. Amen.

Recuerdo con nostalgia aquel himno que ya hace
tiempo que no canto: ‟Jesús es mi rey soberano”. Me gusta mucho, tanto por su
letra como por su música.
Puede ser que para algunas personas hablar del
concepto de un Dios que es como un soberano o rey, les parezca algo obsoleto en
nuestros tiempos.
Ya quedan pocos gobiernos de reyes o soberanos; y
los pocos que quedan son más simbólicos que reales. Pero hay una realidad, sea
cual fuere el nombre que le queramos dar, nuestro Dios es el más excelso; como
nos recuerda el salmista.
Uno de los grandes postulados de la Reforma
Protestante fue precisamente este concepto de la soberanía de Dios. No hay ser
humano, institución o cosa alguna que pueda ocupar ese lugar. El ser humano de
nuestros tiempos está sometido a numerosas tentaciones de soberanía. Está la
soberanía de la moda, las fiestas, el dinero, el sexo, etc. Ninguna de ellas
por sí sola es mala, lo malo es cuando las hacemos dioses.
Oración: Padre, enséñame a reconocerte como mi rey y Señor.
Perdóname cuando te ofendo con mis acciones, poniendo la misión que me has
encomendado en el último lugar de mi lista de prioridades. Amén
