WITHOUT SELF-INTEREST

PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4

Not looking to your own interests,

but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:4

The life of human beings in society is a life of relationships. One cannot live in complete isolation. We need one another. Nevertheless, we can fall into the temptation of helping others for the benefits that this can bring to our lives. All of us, perhaps without realizing it, live and relate to one another either from a selfish dimension or from an altruistic one. Selfishness is when we only think of ourselves. In other words, when my own utility and profit is the motive of my actions. Altruism, on the other hand, is when we also think of others.

Through his Word, God teaches us that we should experience our communal lives altruistically, not only looking toward our personal stories, but also by helping others in solidarity. Christianity produces in us the most beautiful and noble feelings. As disciples of Jesus Christ we have his stimulating example. Christ gave himself entirely to do the will of his Father and for love of us. If we think about others, our lives will make sense.

Prayer:  Blessed God, I ask that this love which has been poured out upon us through the Holy Spirit, move us to love others. Amen.

SIN INTERÉS EGOÍSTA

FILIPENSES 2:1-4

No mirando cada uno por lo suyo propio,

sino cada cual también por lo de los otros

Filipenses 2:4

La vida de los seres humanos en sociedad es vida de relaciones. Uno no puede vivir en completo aislamiento. Nos necesitamos unos a otros. Sin embargo, podemos caer en la tentación de ayudar a otros por el provecho que esto puede traer a nuestras vidas.

Todos, quizás sin darnos cuenta, vivimos y nos relacionamos desde una dimensión egoísta o altruista. Egoísmo es cuando pensamos sólo en nosotros mismos. Es decir, cuando mi propia utilidad  y provecho es el móvil de mis acciones. Altruismo en cambio, es cuando también pensamos en los demás. Dios nos enseña a través de su Palabra, que debemos vivir nuestra experiencia comunitaria de manera altruista. No solamente mirando hacia nuestra historia personal, sino que también en ayuda solidaria hacia los demás.

El cristianismo produce en nosotros los sentimientos más bellos y nobles. Como discípulos y discípulas de Jesucristo tenemos el estimulante ejemplo suyo. Cristo se dio por entero para hacer la voluntad de su Padre y por amor a nosotros. Si pensamos en los otros, nuestra vida tendrá sentido.

Oración: Dios bendito, te pido que ese amor que ha sido derramado por nosotros a través de tu Santo Espíritu, nos mueva a amar a los demás. Amén.
