International Children’s Day

TO BE LIKE A CHILD

MATTHEW 18:1-5

. . . and said, "Truly I tell you,

unless you change and become like children,

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:3

In the days of Jesus, and even today, it was very strange for the Master to focus on this symbol of a child as an example. In many ways, children can teach us artful lessons that even a seasoned teacher couldn’t deliver. Suffice it to note the ability to wonder, the willingness to forgive, the openness to learning something new, the gift to get past our surfaces, and so many other things that spring spontaneously from these creatures who are worthy of poems, songs, and essays.

For that reason, today, this International Children’s Day, we raise our prayers to God for children. We pray for ours, that they may live in protective homes filled with love. We pray for those we don’t know, that they may have the ability to survive under more difficult conditions. We pray for the Church, that it be a beacon of hope for them and that it can rear them in commitment to the Kingdom of God.

The child in the story of Matthew confronts us with ethical challenges as a family and as a Church. For example, we must possess qualities which, even though not visible or evident, do shape our forms of behavior. In the case of this passage, the quality that Jesus highlights is humility, an attribute that is often in short supply in today’s world, where competence and pride supplant the pillars of Christian ethics. Let’s be humble like this child, and we will build truly transparent relationships around us, as God desires of us.

Prayer: Good and gracious God, allow humility and love to guide us in your path of peace. Amen.

Ser como un niño

Mateo 18:1-5

Y dijo: “De cierto, de cierto les digo, que si ustedes

no cambian y se vuelven como niños,

no entrarán al reino de los cielos”

Para los tiempos de Jesús, y aún hoy día, resultaba muy extraño este gesto que protagoniza el Maestro: pone a un niño como ejemplo. En muchas cosas los niños y niñas nos enseñan magistrales lecciones que ni siquiera el más avezado maestro sería capaz de dictar. Baste resaltar la capacidad de asombro, la voluntad de perdonar, la apertura al aprendizaje y a lo nuevo, el don de sacar a flor de piel lo mejor de nosotros… y tantas otras cosas que brotan espontáneamente de esas criaturas dignas de poemas, canciones y tratados.

Por eso hoy, Día Internacional de la Infancia, elevamos nuestras oraciones a Dios a favor de los niños y niñas. Oramos por los nuestros, porque vivan en hogares protegidos y llenos de amor, oramos por los desconocidos, porque tengan la capacidad de sobrevivir bajo las condiciones más difíciles. Oramos por la Iglesia, para que pueda ser faro de esperanza para ellos y ellas, y porque pueda educarles en el compromiso con el reino de Dios. El niño de esta historia de Mateo nos enfrenta a retos éticos como familia y como Iglesia. Para ser ejemplo debemos poseer cualidades que, aunque no sean visibles o evidentes, sí modelen nuestra manera de comportarnos. En el caso de este pasaje la cualidad que Jesús resalta es la humildad, un atributo que muchas veces escasea en este mundo de hoy en el que la soberbia y la competencia desechan a un lado pilares de nuestra ética cristiana. Seamos humildes como este niño, y construiremos a nuestro alrededor relaciones verdaderamente transparentes como Dios quiere de nosotros.

Oración: Dios bueno, permite que sean la humildad y el amor quienes nos guíen por tu senda de paz. Amén.
