 BLESSED ARE THE POOR

 MATTHEW 5:1-11

Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (NIV)

At times, I feel as though the kingdom Jesus presents us with is the world in reverse. Who is going to be content by being poor? Is someone happy when they are insulted? Can one cry in order to laugh? What, then, do Jesus’ words mean: Happy are you the poor…those who are hungry, those who mourn?

We can’t say that the poor are happy for being poor, nor can they be envied for being hungry. The Gospel often induces us to help the poor, share bread with the hungry, to lovingly embrace the desolate.

When he says blessed are you the poor, Jesus is pointing to the special form of blessing and God’s grace that rests upon the poor, the hungry, the downcast. God is with them, and knows their needs, their pain and their suffering. God does not scorn anyone for being poor, nor are riches a sign of blessing. On the contrary, Jesus doesn’t say: stop suffering, rather, blessed are those who suffer, may they feel that God is with them.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for not forsaking us. Your faithfulness to us is eternal. We ask that we might be your hands to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and console those who suffer. Amen.

DICHOSOS LOS POBRES

 MATEO 5:1-11

Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu,

porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos

Mateo 5:3

A veces siento que el reino que nos presenta Jesús es el mundo al revés. ¿Quién va a estar contento por ser pobre? ¿Alguien está feliz cuando lo insultan? ¿Puede uno llorar para reírse? ¿Qué significan entonces las palabras de Jesús: ¿Dichosos ustedes los pobres… los que tienen hambre...los que lloran?

No podemos decir que son felices los pobres por ser pobres, tampoco se los puede envidiar por tener hambre. En muchas ocasiones el evangelio nos induce a ayudar a los pobres, a compartir el pan con el hambriento y abrazar con amor al desolado.

Al decir dichosos ustedes los pobres, Jesús indica que, sobre los pobres, los hambrientos, los tristes, descansa de forma especial la bendición y la gracia de Dios. Dios está con ellos, conoce su necesidad, su dolor, su sufrimiento. No por ser pobre alguien es despreciado por Dios, ni la riqueza es señal de bendición; al contrario, Jesús no dice: Pare de sufrir, más bien dice: Benditos los que sufren, sientan que Dios está con ustedes.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por no desampararnos. Tu fidelidad a nosotros es eterna. Te pedimos que podamos ser tus manos para vestir al desnudo, dar pan al hambriento y consolar a los que sufren. Amén.
