LIGHT

JOHN 12:27-36

Jesus said: believe in the light while you have the light,

so that you may become children of light. (NIV)

John 12:36

“Jesus, the light of the world,” is a well-used phrase. If we take darkness as confusion and lack of understanding, we note just how much we need that light.

A few days ago, I organized a party known as a “pajama party” for my 10-year-old son and some friends. During the night, I sensed a pillow fight, and I got up in the darkness and turned on the light. There I could see the disaster and disorder they’d made.

The light of Christ evidences the things in our lives that are out of place and out of step with the values of the Kingdom, those that bring us to live in harmony with creation and with our neighbor, seeking not only our own welfare, but also the welfare of others.

It’s the light of Christ that leads us to adjust our life values to reflect through concrete actions that we are sons and daughters of that light.  Furthermore, that we take interest in those who, as in Jesus’s time, were second-class citizens, but in no less a sense the sons and daughters of God. That light is what we need to make shine, to keep above us.

Prayer: Lord, let your light shine through my actions. Help me also to share that light with others. Amen.

LA LUZ

JUAN 12:27-36

Jesús dijo: Crean en la luz mientras todavía la tienen,

para que permanezcan en la luz.

“Jesús, la luz del mundo” es una frase muy usada. Si tomamos la oscuridad como confusión y falta de entendimiento, notamos cuánto necesitamos esa luz.

Hace pocos días organicé en mi casa para mi hijo de diez años y unos amigos una ya famosa fiesta conocida como “piyamada”. En la noche sentí una guerra de almohadas y me levanté en la oscuridad y encendí la luz. Allí pude ver el desastre y el desorden que habían hecho.

La luz de Cristo deja en evidencia las cosas de nuestra vida que están fuera de lugar y no se ajustan a los valores del Reino, que nos llevan a vivir en armonía con la creación y con nuestro prójimo, buscando no sólo nuestro bien, sino el de los demás también.

           

Es la luz de Cristo la que lleva a ajustar nuestros valores de vida para reflejar en acciones concretas que somos hijos e hijas de esa luz, y que por tanto nos interesamos en aquellos que, como en tiempos de Jesús, eran ciudadanos de segunda categoría, pero no por eso menos hijos e hijas de Dios. Esa luz es la que tenemos que hacer brillar y mantener en lo alto.

Oración: Señor, permite que tu luz brille a través de mis acciones. Ayúdame además a compartir luz con los demás. Amén.
