LIVING WATER

JOHN 4:1-14

Jesus said to her: “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty.  The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.”

 John 4:13-14 NRSV

Jesus spoke these words when he encountered a Samaritan woman at a well in Samaria, conversing deeply about the things of God.  This encounter between Jesus and this woman causes admiration among the disciples, since Jesus breaks the social norms of his time by coming close to her and speaking with her. 

The Samaritans were undesirable people for the Jews.  After a deep debate, the woman recognizes Jesus as the Messiah and accepts the offer that he gives:  drink the living water so you will no longer be thirsty.  Jesus offers the gifts of God so that she will no longer be in need; he offers fulfillment.

We all know how important it is to have water and food to live.  We can live under a tree, without studies, without clothing, but not without water.

Recently we have realized the high value of water as we have faced a time of drought in our country for multiple months when it did not rain as it should have, and everything has become more difficult.

Today I value every drop of water even more, and through this I understand also the importance of Jesus’ offer. 

Prayer: Lord, give me the living water so I can share it with others.  Amen.

AGUA VIVA

JUAN 4:1-14

Jesús dijo: Todos los que beben de esta agua, volverán a tener sed; pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré,

nunca volverá a tener sed.

 Juan 4:13-14

Jesús dice estas palabras cuando se encuentra en Samaria, junto a un pozo de agua, dialogando profundamente sobre las cosas de Dios con una mujer samaritana. Este encuentro de Jesús con aquella mujer causa admiración en los discípulos, pues Jesús, al acercarse y hablar con ella, rompe con la norma social de su tiempo.

Los samaritanos eran personas no deseables para los judíos. Después de un profundo debate, la mujer reconoce a Jesús como el Mesías y acepta el ofrecimiento que Él le hace: beber del agua viva para no tener ya sed. Jesús ofrece los dones de Dios para que ya no pase necesidad, ofrece saciedad.

Todos sabemos lo importante que es tener agua y comida para vivir. Podemos vivir bajo un árbol, sin estudios, sin ropa; pero sin agua no.

Recién nos damos cuenta y valoramos el agua cuando como ahora en este tiempo de sequía en nuestro país hace varios meses que no llueve como debería, y todo se dificulta más.

Hoy valoro mucho más cada gota de agua y por eso entiendo también la importancia del ofrecimiento de Jesús.

Oración: Señor, dame del agua viva para que pueda compartirla con los demás. Amén.
