TO SERVE AND TO HOPE

1 THESSALONIANS 1: 2-10

       how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God,

and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead–

Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (NRSV)

      The Christians of Thessalonica had been converted only a short time, but the Apostle was able to speak glowingly of them. He testified about their work of love and their constancy in hope. The whole region had heard talk of them. Everyone knew that those Christians, since having turned their backs on the idols that had previously ruled their lives, were occupied with serving God and hoping for the return of Jesus Christ.

      This is the meaning of the life of every believer: to serve and to hope. The one cannot take place without the other. We can only serve the Lord in a way that pleases him if we really hope for Him.  Thus, with a joyous heart we know that we will soon see the One we love, and with a desire to please him, we will calmly and hopefully do what he asks. We won’t be hoping without doing anything because we well know that our spirit and our heart cannot remain empty. If we aren’t busy working for our Master, our lives will automatically lose meaning, our love for Jesus Christ will go stale, and our desire to be with him will diminish.

      Let us rise every morning thinking about his return for the definitive establishment of his Kingdom. These thoughts will sustain us and motivate us in all our daily occupations. So, we will desire not to squander the time remaining to us.

Prayer: My good God, help us to always be ready to work at your tasks and in your Kingdom. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

SERVIR Y ESPERAR

1 TESALONISENSES 1: 2-10

       Como os convertisteis de los ídolos de Dios, para servir al Dios vivo y verdadero, y esperar de los cielos a su Hijo, al cual resucitó de los muertos, a Jesús, quien nos libra de la ira venidera

1 Tesalonicenses 1:9-10

       Los cristianos de Tesalónica se habían convertido hacía poco tiempo, pero el Apóstol pudo hablar con elogios de ellos. Testificó de su trabajo de amor y de su constancia en la esperanza. Toda la región había oído hablar de ello. Todos sabían que esos cristianos, después de haber dado la espalda a los ídolos que antes dirigían sus vidas, estaban ocupados en servir a Dios y esperaban el regreso de Jesucristo. 

      Este es el sentido de la vida para cada creyente:  servir y esperar. Lo uno no puede ir sin lo otro. Sólo podemos servir al Señor de una manera que le agrade si esperamos en Él realmente. Así, con el corazón lleno de gozo porque sabemos que pronto veremos a Aquel a quien amamos, y con el deseo de agradarle, haremos tranquila y esperadamente lo que nos pide. No estaremos esperándole sin hacer nada, pues sabemos muy bien que nuestro espíritu y nuestro corazón no pueden permanecer vacíos. Si no estamos ocupados en trabajar para nuestro Maestro, automáticamente nuestras vidas dejarán de tener sentido, nuestro amor por Jesucristo perderá su frescura y nuestro deseo de estar junto a Él menguará.

      Levantémonos cada mañana pensando en su regreso a través de la instauración definitiva de su Reino. Este pensamiento nos sostendrá y nos motivará en todas nuestras ocupaciones diarias. Entonces desearemos no despilfarrar el tiempo que nos queda.

       Oración:  Mi buen Dios, ayúdanos a estar siempre dispuestos a trabajar en tu tarea y en tu Reino. Por Jesús, amén.
