ADVICE TO YOUNG PEOPLE

ECCLESIASTES 11:9-10

Rejoice, young man, while you are young… 

Ecclesiastes 11:9a (NRSV)

           In these times young people and adults should have such a degree of maturity that both can truly feel like “brothers.” The word brothers is in quotation marks, because in our churches, with a majority adult membership, there is a certain degree of misunderstanding that has not yet been overcome. The older ones address the young in a very paternalistic way; of course their intentions are very good, but paternalism makes them underestimate the real values of many young people whom they thereby misjudge. These young people act the same when they are teenagers as children and therefore they become identified as small, without our realizing that they have already passed the youthful stage. They are life saving; they occupy important positions in their school or work. In short, they carry out a really successful social work and many times this is not known because the older ones continue seeing them as small. 

            I believe, brothers, that what we must look for in the joy of youth is a life of witness and faith, not pretending that all are consecrated equally, and remembering that we will all be judged and we have no reason to judge each other. That is why I ask the “oldest” to pray for the joy of youth and the youngest to think well of those in old age, achieving the harmony and love the brotherhood that we all wish to spread.

Prayer: Lord, we pray that we may know true brotherhood. Amen.

ECLESIASTES 11:9-10

Alégrate joven en tu juventud…

Eclesiastés 11:9a

En estos tiempos los jóvenes y los adultos deben tener un grado de madurez tal, que ambos puedan sentirse verdaderamente como “hermanos”. La palabra hermanos va entre comillas, pues en oca-siones en nuestras Iglesias, con una membresía mayoritariamente adulta, existe cierto grado de incomprensión que aun no se ha superado; los más viejos se dirigen a los jóvenes de una manera muy paternalista, por supuesto las intenciones son muy buenas, pero el paternalismo hace subestimar los valores reales de muchos jóvenes que son juzgados mal. Por ejemplo: que es inmaduro, que no se le ve o no se le nota su fe aunque asiste a las actividades. Estos jóvenes adoptan la misma postura que cuando adolescentes y vienen por tanto identificados como pequeños, sin pensar que ya han rebasado la etapa juvenil, son de salvar vidas, ocupan cargos importantes en su centro de estudios o trabajo, en fin, realizar una labor social exitosa realmente y muchas veces esto no se conoce pues los más viejos siguen viéndoles pequeños.

Creo, hermanos, que lo que hay que buscar en la alegría de la juventud, es una vida de testimonio y fe, no pretender que todos sean consagrados por igual, y recordar que nosotros todos sere-mos juzgados y no tenemos ninguno de nosotros por qué juzgarnos unos a los otros. Por ello les pido a los más “ viejitos” que oren por alegría de la juventud y a los más jóvenes a pensar en los de la tercera edad, logrando con armonía y amor la hermandad que todos deseamos esparcir.

Oración: Señor, te pedimos por la verdadera hermandad que conocemos. Amén.
