FRIENDS IN FAITH

Mark 2:1-12

Some people arrived, and four of them were bringing a man who was paralyzed.

             Life was very open in Palestine. An open door was an invitation to anyone who wanted to enter.

             Imagine the four taking their friend to Jesus, only to discover that they could not reach him because of the crowd! They weren’t  able to make their way through, but these were people with initiative What did these men do? They lowered their crippled friend through the opening in the ceiling. Imagine and  try to listen to the people downstairs, complaining as the debris fell from the wide gap appearing on the ceiling. No doubt these four friends refused to be rejected. They persevered until they put the man in front of Jesus.

            When Jesus saw faith that smiled at obstacles, he must have had a complacent smile. He said “Son, your sins have been forgiven”. This may seem a somewhat  strange way to start a cure. However, in Palestine in Jesus’ time it was natural and inevitable. The Jews necessarily related sin and suffering. They believed that if a person was suffering it was because he had sinned. Scripture tells us that Jesus healed the man not by his faith, but by that of his friends. Obviously, we all have a commitment and a responsibility to the lives of our friends. We are to watch, pray and accompany our friends who are sick.

 

Prayer: Dear God, help us to be loving friends to those who need us. Amen

AMISTADES EN LA FE

Marcos 2:1-12

Entonces vinieron a él unos, trayendo un paralitico que era cargado por cuatro.

            La vida era muy abierta en Palestina. Una puerta abierta era una invitación a todos los que quisieran entrar. ¡Imagínense a los cuatro llevando a su amigo hacia Jesús, solo para descubrir que no podían llegar hasta él debido a la multitud! No pudieron abrirse paso entre la gente, pero eran personas de iniciativa. ¿Qué hicieron estos hombres? Bajaron a su amigo lisiado a través de la abertura del techo. Imagine y trate de escuchar a las personas abajo, quejándose a medida que los escombros caían del hueco ancho que iba apareciendo en el techo. Sin dudas estos cuatros amigos rehusaron ser rechazados. Perseveraron hasta que pusieron al hombre frente a Jesús.

            Cuando Jesús vio la fe que se reía de los obstáculos, debe de haber sonreído complacido; miró al hombre y le dijo: «Hijo, tus pecados te han sido perdonados.» Esta puede parecernos una manera un poco extraña para comenzar una cura. Pero en Palestina, en tiempos de Jesús, era natural e inevitable. Los judíos relacionaban necesariamente pecado y sufrimiento. Creían que, si una persona estaba sufriendo, era porque había pecado. La Escritura nos narra que Jesús sanó al hombre, no por su fe, sino por la de sus amigos. Evidentemente todos tenemos un compromiso y una responsabilidad con la vida de nuestros amigos y amigas. Hemos de velar, orar y acompañar a nuestras amistades que están enfermas.

 

Oración: Amado Dios, ayúdanos a ser amigos amorosos y fieles de aquellas personas que nos necesitan. Amén.
