WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30

GOD IS OUR NECESSITY

PSALM 42

“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

Psalm 42:2a

A few months ago I read the following story in a book about spirituality:  A teacher said to his disciple: “If you have need of God…God will come to you.” The disciple did not understand these words very well, but one day his teacher asked him to submerge himself in water. As he did so, the teacher held him underneath the water, until the disciple became frantically agitated because he couldn't breathe.  Upon releasing him, the teacher asked him:

“What did you feel when you were under water?”

“A great need to breathe,” replied the disciple.

“Is your need of God just as strong?”

“Oh, no.”

“Well, when it is, you will find God.”

This dialogue contains a great teaching.  We should acknowledge that our need of God is closely related to the problems that we wish to resolve in our lives. Like the psalmist, we should have souls that are thirsty for God, not just in times of crisis, but at each moment of our existence. This is how we will find God.

Prayer: Eternal God, allow our souls to be so thirsty for you that we will seek and find you. Amen.

NECESIDAD DE DIOS

SALMO 42

“Mi alma tiene sed de Dios, del Dios vivo”

Salmo 42:2a

Hace unos meses leí en un libro de espiritualidad la siguiente historia: Se cuenta que un maestro le dijo a su discípulo: “Si necesitas de Dios… Dios vendrá a ti”. El discípulo no entendió muy bien estas palabras, pero un día fue invitado por el maestro a sumergirse en el agua. Al hacerlo, el maestro lo retuvo debajo del agua, hasta que el discípulo comenzó a agitarse porque no podía respirar. Al soltarlo, le preguntó:

-¿Qué has sentido debajo del agua?

-Una fuerte necesidad de respirar-respondió el discípulo.

-¿Es así de fuerte tu necesidad de Dios?

- Oh no.

-Pues cuando lo sea, hallarás a Dios.

Este diálogo encierra una gran enseñanza. Debemos reconocer que nuestra necesidad de Dios está muy relacionada con problemas que deseamos resolver en nuestra vida. Como el salmista debemos tener un alma sedienta de Dios, pero no sólo en las crisis, sino en cada minuto de nuestra existencia. Es así como hallaremos a Dios.

Oración: Dios eterno, permite que nuestra alma esté tan sedienta de ti como para buscarte y hallarte. Amén.
