DAVID, CLEAN OF HEART
1 CHRONICLES 11:1-3
“Then the Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him;
he is the one.’”
1 Samuel 16:12b
In David’s story God reminds us how fickle
human nature can be. David was on the
one hand a naïve and dancing singer, a victorious hero, who consolidated Israel
as a nation through his faithfulness to God.
But on the other hand, he was a mercenary soldier in the service of Israel’s
terrible enemies, the Philistines; he betrayed his most valued soldier, Uriah, sending him off to die in order to marry his wife Bathsheba. Today’s world would call David the father of a
dysfunctional family, whose children would kill and fight against one another
for the kingdom.
David’s history reminds us of our own life
histories. We are often incoherent in
the responses we give to certain situations:
at times we respond according to what the gospel has taught us. Other times we selfishly prioritize according
to what could best benefit ourselves and those who belong to us, while leaving
everyone else on the margin of our good works. Let us allow the love that God
has placed within us to lead us in our work, instead of being led by our own
interests. But above all let us
acknowledge David’s humility as he acknowledged his own errors. Let us learn to ask for forgiveness and to
continue along the journey that the Lord has shown us.
Prayer: God of goodness, grant
us clean hearts and help us to be thankful for all that you give us. Grant that
we may always be coherent, for our actions to reflect our speech, and to speak
according to what we have learned from you. Amen.
DAVID, LIMPIO DE CORAZÓN
1 CRÓNICAS 11:1-3

En la
historia de David Dios nos recuerda cuán voluble puede ser la naturaleza
humana. Por una parte el ingenuo y danzante cantor, el héroe victorioso, quien
consolidó a Israel como nación a través de su fidelidad a Dios. Pero por otra,
mercenario al servicio de los terribles enemigos de Israel, los filisteos;
traidor de su soldado más valioso, Urías heteo, al enviarlo a morir para
casarse con su esposa Betsabé; y como diríamos hoy el padre de una familia
disfuncional, cuyos hijos se matan entre sí y se pelean por el reino. La
historia de David nos recuerda nuestras propias historias de vida. Muchas veces
somos incoherentes en las respuestas que damos a ciertas situaciones: unas
veces respondemos según lo aprendido en el evangelio, otras veces priorizamos
egoístamente sobre lo que pueda significar beneficio para nosotros y los
nuestros, y los demás quedan al margen de nuestro buen obrar. Obremos
dejándonos llevar por el amor que Dios ha puesto en nosotros y no por nuestro
propios intereses. Pero sobre todo reconozcamos en David su humildad para
reconocer los errores. Aprendamos pues nosotros a pedir perdón
y continuar el camino que el Señor nos ha mostrado.
Oración: Dios bueno, que nuestros corazones sean limpios y
agradecidos por tanto que nos das. Permítenos ser siempre coherentes, y hacer
según decimos, y decir según de ti hemos aprendido. Amén.
