OUR LIGHT IS FOR EVERYONE

MATTHEW  5:13-16

“You are the salt of the earth.”

Matthew 5:13

We have heard at times: “your light shines from within,” referring to qualities that we would all like to have.  We are called to be the salt and light of the earth; and yet, on occasion we interpret this calling as a great need for recognition, or with the idea that “we are the most important,” and we forget that we need to be salt and light for others.

Imagine that someone comes to our house and we receive him in the dark and with a dish of unsalted food.   Seen in such a literal manner, it wouldn’t occur to us to receive someone in that way, but throughout our lifetimes this is how we make many people feel. When someone new arrives in our community, we are rarely solicitous to them.

Perhaps what is ‘normal’ for us would be incomprehensible for those who visit us, and we might embarrass people who don’t know our customs. Let us make our light shine brightly, comparing it to tasting a dish of food seasoned with just the right amount of salt. It is possible that our good deed will go unrecognized, but if we stop doing it, someone will feel it.  Someone may soon have need of us, someone may need to be included, and someone may need this light that is lifted up high in order to light up the house. 

Prayer:  Beloved God, we think of those who are not with us today in our communities because they did not feel welcomed as brothers and sisters.

A veces hemos escuchado, “eres de los que brillan con luz propia”, como referencia a cualidades que todos quisiéramos tener. Estamos llamados a ser sal y luz de mundo; sin embargo, en ocasiones interpretamos este llamado con una gran necesidad de reconocimiento, o con la idea de que “somos lo más importante”, y obviamos que tenemos que ser sal y luz para los otros. Imaginemos que alguien llega a nuestra casa y lo recibimos a oscuras y con un plato de comida sin sal. Visto así literalmente no se nos ocurriría semejante recibimiento, pero a lo largo de nuestras vidas es así como hacemos sentir a muchos. Cuando alguien llega nuevo a nuestras comunidades pocas veces nos mostramos solícitos. Quizás lo que para nosotros es “normal” sea incomprensible para quienes nos visitan, y podemos llegar a avergonzar a las personas si no conocen nuestra tradición. Hagamos brillar nuestra luz, comparándola con la sensación de comerse un plato de comida con la sal justa. Posiblemente nuestra buena obra pase inadvertida,  pero si la dejamos de hacer, alguien lo sentirá. Puede que bien cerca alguien necesite de nosotros, alguien necesite ser incluida, alguien necesite de esa luz que se pone en lo alto para iluminar la casa.

Oración: Dios amado, pensemos en los que no están hoy en nuestras comunidades porque un día fueron y no se sintieron acogidos como hermanos y hermanas.
