FROM FEAR TO JOY

JOHN 6.16-21

“But he said to them, ‘It is I; don’t be afraid.’”

John  6.20

This story has always drawn my attention to one thing:  it is not the sudden great wind that took the disciples by surprise in the middle of the sea that frightens them, but the arrival of their Teacher, in an unexpected and amazing way, walking over the waters.

 

Something similar often happens to us in our relationship with God.  We are hardly alarmed by the situations or behaviors that surround us but which should scandalize us by their great departure from the expectations of the kingdom of God: a crisis in the manifestation of values, trampling upon God’s creation, the increase of violence…and yet we are unaware when God approaches us in an unexpected and marvelous manner:  in the many opportunities to serve; in the miracle of love, that comes to us in different ways; in the serendipitous direction we find in His Word and in so many other forms.  I invite you today, brothers and sisters, to pay special attention to each incident that occurs around you, in order to recognize that it is in those supposed fearful situations that God manifests Himself most fully.

 

Prayer:  Lord, grant that as disciples we may go from fear to the joy of reencountering you. Amen.

DEL TEMOR AL GOZO

JUAN 6.16-21

“Mas él les dijo: Yo soy, no temáis”

En este relato siempre me ha llamado la atención una cosa: los discípulos no sienten temor por el gran viento que les sorprendió en medio del mar, sino por la llegada de su Maestro, de manera inesperada y portentosa, caminando sobre las aguas.

Algo similar suele ocurrirnos a nosotros en nuestra relación con Dios. Apenas nos alarmamos ante situaciones o conductas que nos rodean y que deberían escandalizarnos por cuanto no responden a las expectativas del reinado de Dios: crisis en la manifestación de valores, atropello a la creación de Dios, acrecentamiento de la violencia… sin embargo no reconocemos cuando Dios se nos acerca de manera inesperada y portentosa: en las tantas oportunidades de servir; en el milagro del amor, que se nos muestra de disímiles maneras; en la orientación atinada y oportuna que encontramos en su Palabra y de tantas otras formas. Hermanos y hermanas, en este día le invito a prestar especial atención a cada suceso que acontezca a su alrededor, para reconocer que en las supuestas situaciones de miedo es donde se manifiesta Dios de manera más plena.

 

Oración: Señor, que como los discípulos vayamos del miedo al gozo del reencuentro contigo. Amén.
