A NEW COMMAND I GIVE YOU
1 JOHN 4:7-21
“And he
has given us this command: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
1 John 4:21
I’ve always liked this passage for talking about what love really is. The author indicates the stages needed in
order to understand what love means. First:
Love is God. Second: Love is the way to be in God. Third:
Love is a perpetual practice. God
is the focus of a love that overflows.
Everything flows from an original source of love. But we are tired of preaching that, and even
so it seems that the reality differs greatly.
This is why we need to read today’s biblical text and find the great
lesson within it for our own times.
John has taught us that love is not something about
which to talk or to think: it is for living,
for living intensely. We live within a society; we have a social commitment to
fulfill and it is God’s will for us to organize our daily lives around truly
loving others.
Prayer: My God, teach me to love with all the seriousness
and all the risk that this entails. Give
me the opportunity to show my love to someone today. Amen.

El que ama a Dios, ame también a su hermano”

Siempre me ha gustado este texto para interpretar lo que realmente es el
amor. El autor señala etapas necesarias para comprender lo que significa el
amor. Primero: el amor es Dios. Segundo. El amor es el camino para estar en
Dios. Tercero: el amor es una práctica constante. Dios es foco de un amor que se desborda. Todo surge de un amor
original. Pero estamos cansados de predicar eso, y aun así parece que la realidad es bien distinta. Por esta razón
debemos leer el texto que nos ocupa hoy y encontrar en él una gran lección para
nuestros días.
Juan
nos ha enseñado que el amor no es algo para hablar de él o pensar acerca de él:
es algo para vivir, para vivirlo
intensamente. Nosotros vivimos en una sociedad, tenemos un compromiso social
que realizar y es la voluntad de Dios que organicemos nuestra vida diaria
amando realmente a los demás.
Oración: Dios mío, enséñame a amar
con toda la seriedad y el riesgo que ello supone. Dame la oportunidad de
mostrarle hoy mi amor a alguien. Amén.
