IS THIS THE CHRIST?

Luke 4:21-30

“You do not know me or my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also.”

John 8:19

There are three ways to know someone: 1) by what the person says he or she is; 2) by what we imagine the person to be; 3) by what the person really is.  This last way of knowing someone is the most difficult way to access “the other,” because we rarely if ever truly know another person.

Jesus grew up and became a man in Nazareth, and it is understood that he was known there by the majority of the inhabitants of that area.  However, in spite of having lived there for so long among them—according to the biblical passage—Jesus was not known.

We also say that we know him, but the reality is that we do not know him, in spite of the deep impressions and signals that he has bequeathed us through his words and his actions.  Let us ask the Father to ready our hearts so that we can overcome the trials that his Son may sovereignly give to us, and thereby truly come to know him.  

Prayer: God of goodness, open my eyes so that I may recognize you when our joy arises and overflows. Amen.

“Ustedes no me conocen a mí, ni tampoco conocen a mi Padre. Si me conocieran a mi, también conocerían a mi Padre”

Hay tres maneras de conocer a alguien: 1) por lo que la persona dice que es; 2) por lo que nosotros nos imaginamos que es; 3) por lo que la persona realmente es. Esta última forma de conocer a alguien es la forma más difícil de acceso “al otro”, porque casi nunca o nunca sabemos cómo es realmente una persona.

En Nazaret Jesús creció y se hizo hombre, y se da por sentado que allí era conocido por la mayoría de los habitantes de aquella aldea. Sin embargo, a pesar de vivir tanto tiempo entre ellos —según el texto—, Jesús no fue reconocido.

También nosotros decimos que le conocemos, pero en realidad no le conocemos, a pesar de las profundas huellas y señales que nos legó a través de sus palabras y sus hechos. Roguemos al Padre que nos disponga el corazón para que podamos captar las pruebas que su Hijo soberanamente quiera darnos, y le conozcamos en verdad.
