YOU ARE VICTORIOUS, GALILEAN!
Revelations
4:12-19
“...and
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the
glory of God, the Father”
Philippians 2:11
First century Christians were given to apply the
title of Lord to Christ, because by doing so they were making a public protest
of worship to the Roman emperor, and simultaneously stating that only Jesus
governed their lives.
By the middle of the second century, Polycarp,
the notable Christian, preferred martyrdom to saying Kyrios Kaisar, that is: Lord Caesar.
The emperor Julian wanted to exterminate
Christianity by blood letting and with fire, and he wanted humanity to forget
Christ’s name. And when he subjugated Christian communities by force he
sarcastically asked the faithful Christian, “Alright, what is the Galilean
carpenter doing now?” and the Christian answered, “He’s cutting wood to make
your coffin.”
Shortly thereafter, Julian was overthrown and
died. In his death throes his final words were, “You’re victorious, Galilean.”

Lords, all my trust and loyalty is placed in you. Amen.

Los
cristianos del primer siglo gustaban de aplicar a Cristo el título de Señor,
porque de esta manera hacían una protesta pública del culto al emperador romano
y declaraban a la vez que solo Jesus era el que gobernaba sus vidas.
A
mediados del siglo segundo, el gran cristiano Policarpo prefirió el martirio
antes que decir, Kyrios Kaisar, es decir, Señor César
El
emperador Juliano quería exterminar el cristianismo a sangre y fuego, y quería
que la humanidad olvidase el nombre de Cristo. Y cuando sometió por la fuerza a
comunidades cristianas, le pregunto con sorna a un fiel cristiano: —“Pues bien,
¿qué hace ahora el Carpintero galileo?” El cristiano contestó: —“Está cortando
madera para hacer tu ataúd”.
Poco
tiempo después Juliano era vencido y muerto. Cuando agonizaba sus últimas
palabras fueron: “Venciste, Galileo”.
Oración: Señor de señores, toda mi
confianza y lealtad está puesta en ti. Amén.
