 PERFUMING THE HOUSE

John 12:1-8

The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

John  12:3b

At the start of our spiritual journey to the cross together with Jesus, we look at the words and gestures of this text. John the Evangelist puts us face to face with the friendly attitudes of the Teacher’s family. We return to Bethany, the house of meeting and love. There, once again, Martha was serving, Lazarus was eating a meal in honor of his friend. And Mary? Mary welcomes, blesses and consecrates the Teacher for eternity. She perfumes the feet of the Master, and the aroma fills the house. With this gesture, Mary confirms her discipleship, her commitment, and the offering of her life to Jesus.

Of course, Judas doesn’t understand this. What will he understand? His life boils down to answering the questions “How can I profit? What can I gain from my actions?”  That’s Judas, demanding and disputing with solemn arguments so that he doesn’t allow himself to be invaded in a genuine manner by Jesus’ love. That’s why small everyday miracles are lost. So goes the path to nonsense and loss of spirit.

Let’s reflect on each of the acts that the text presents to us. To serve and to sit at table with Jesus are marvelous gestures that confirm our complicity with God. But let’s not forget to perfume the house, the air, life itself, with the aroma of commitment and discipleship. Let’s not forget what is essential, that which can be a drive, a force which makes you get out of yourself, to give yourself completely to God.

Prayer: Lord, help us to learn to live your message and to perfume life with your gospel. Allow our commitment to push us towards you. We want to serve you now and forever. Amen.

Perfumar la casa

Juan 12:1-8

… Y toda la casa se llenó del aroma del perfume

Al comenzar nuestro peregrinaje hasta la cruz, junto a Jesús, miramos hacia las palabras y los gestos de este texto. El evangelio de Juan nos pone frente a las actitudes de la familia amiga del Maestro. Volvemos a Betania, casa de encuentro y amistad. Allí, de nuevo Marta servía, Lázaro comía en una cena de honor por su amigo ¿Y María? María acoge, bendice y consagra al maestro por la eternidad. Ella, perfuma los pies del Maestro y llena de aroma la casa. María con este gesto, confirma su discipulado, su compromiso, es la ofrenda de su vida a Jesús. Por supuesto, Judas no entiende de esto. ¿Qué va a entender? Su vida se resume a responder a las preguntas ¿Qué provecho puedo obtener? ¿Cuáles son las ganancias de mis acciones? Ese es Judas, reclamando y discutiendo con argumentos solemnes para no dejarse invadir de manera genuina por el amor de Jesús. Por eso se pierde los pequeños milagros cotidianos. Así va de camino a ese sinsentido, y falta de espíritu.

Reflexionemos en cada uno de las acciones que nos presenta el texto. Servir y sentarse a la mesa con Jesús son gestos maravillosos que confirman nuestra complicidad con Dios. Pero no nos olvidemos de perfumar la casa, el aire, la vida, con el aroma del compromiso y el discipulado. No nos olvidemos de lo esencial, aquello que puede ser un impulso, una fuerza que te hace salir de ti para entregarte por completo a Dios.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a entender y a vivir tu mensaje, y a perfumar la vida con tu evangelio. Permite que nuestro compromiso nos empuje a ti. Queremos servirte hoy y siempre. Amén.
