IF THE KERNEL DOESN’T DIE

JOHN 12:23-26

Very truly I tell you,

unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,

it remains only a single seed.

But if it dies it produces many seeds.

John 12:24

Sacrifice is a word we don’t like much. We prefer to live our lives without anything that restricts us or demands more than we can offer without much effort. Nevertheless, our existence is marked by cycles that imply sacrifice and daily death to give way for something new; to give way to life.

Birth is a painful and sacrificial process, but the result is a new life. Planting implies sacrifice, sleeplessness, and arduous work, and as the text tells us, the seed must die to give way for a new harvest.

Jesus made this clear during his ministry; his life was a constant pilgrimage through the villages, towns, and cities. What great sacrifice, even coming to the point of surrendering his own life to make way for that abundant life for everyone!

Brothers and sisters, during this time let us examine our share of sacrifices, let us give back more to God and let us not expect to receive so much: from our church, from our leaders, from our neighbors. Let us discard the justifications, the arguments that impede us from submitting to the Lord. Let us not take an inventory of our loss of time or resources. May our harvest be abundant for the Lord! We brought nothing into this world, life is a gift of God, so let us offer it to him daily without selfishness, serving him and denying ourselves every day so we may find ourselves in him.

Prayer: Good and faithful Lord, forgive us for our apathy, our useless and sterile time. Help us to harvest the fruits of your spirit with a sacrificial life committed to you. Help us to give more of what we expect to receive. Amen.

Les aseguro que si el grano de trigo al caer en tierra no muere, queda él solo; pero si muere, da abundante cosecha

Sacrificio es una palabra que no nos gusta mucho. Preferimos vivir la vida sin nada que nos ate, o nos exija más de lo que podamos ofrecer sin mucho esfuerzo. Sin embargo nuestra existencia está marcada por ciclos que implican sacrificios y muerte cotidianas para dar paso a algo nuevo, para dar paso a la vida.

Un parto es un proceso doloroso y sacrificado, pero el resultado es una nueva vida. Una siembra implica sacrificio, desvelo, arduo trabajo, y como nos dice el texto, la semilla debe morir para dar paso a la nueva cosecha.

Jesús tuvo esto claro durante todo su ministerio, su vida fue un constante peregrinaje por las aldeas, pueblos y ciudades. ¡Cuánto sacrificio, hasta llegar a la entrega de su propia vida, para dar paso a esa vida abundante para todos y todas!

Hermanos y hermanas examinemos en este tiempo nuestras cuotas de sacrificios, entreguemos más a Dios y no esperemos recibir tanto, de la Iglesia, de los líderes, del prójimo. Desechemos las justificaciones, los argumentos que nos impiden rendirnos al Señor. No saquemos cuentas por nuestra pérdida de tiempo, de recursos. ¡Que nuestra cosecha sea abundante para el Señor! Nada hemos traído a este mundo, la vida es regalo de Dios, ofrezcámosla diariamente a él, sin egoísmo, sirviéndole y perdiéndonos cada día para encontrarnos en él.

Oración: Dios bueno y fiel, perdónanos por nuestras tibiezas, nuestras apatías, nuestro tiempo inútil y estéril. Ayúdanos a cosechar los frutos de tu Espíritu con una vida sacrificada y comprometida contigo. Ayúdanos a entregar más de lo que esperamos recibir. Amén.
