SHOCK BEFORE THE BETRAYAL

JOHN 13:21-30

After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”

John 13:21

Jesus’ attitudes bewilder our human logic. How is it possible that the response in the face of the betrayal of a friend be one of shock?

For us, who are always pointing an accusatory finger, expecting to answer the slightest attack, always trying to be those who laugh first and strike last, this message is shattering.

Jesus invites us to disarm so that we may love each other. He challenges us to open the playing field, to be transparent with those who approach us from the rear, to extend a hand to offer a bit of bread to those who would injure us. This is not submission, it’s love. How many barriers need to be overcome to love this way? Jesus knew that his prophetic journey led to death as a victim of hate, injustice, and evil. If it weren’t Judas it would have been another to lead him to his enemies. Evil doesn’t need many ruses to achieve its objectives. Nevertheless, Jesus is moved, he knows that his disciple Judas has still learned nothing. He knows he is a victim of ambition, the lack of regard, the lack of God.

Judas betrays his Teacher, he betrays God, he betrays himself. Jesus is moved by the betrayal because he knows that Judas does not enjoy the freedom that he experiences, the freedom of being consistent with what he thinks, the freedom to go even to the final consequences in faithfulness to God’s plan, the freedom to know that death is not final, the freedom of resurrection. Jesus is moved by betrayal today as well.

Prayer: Lord, I know that at times you look at me and sigh, shocked as well. Forgive me and strengthen me to follow and be faithful to you under any circumstance. Amen.

JUAN 13:21-30

Después de decir esto, Jesús se sintió

Las actitudes de Jesús desconciertan nuestra lógica humana. ¿Cómo es posible que la respuesta ante la traición de un amigo sea la conmoción?

Para nosotros, que siempre estamos con el dedo acusador, esperando el menor ataque para ripostar, intentando ser siempre los que ríen primero y golpean de último, este mensaje es demoledor.

Jesús nos invita a desarmarnos para amarnos, nos reta a abrir el juego, a ser transparentes con los que vienen por la espalda, a extender la mano para brindar un trozo de pan al que nos hace daño. Esto no es sumisión, es amor. ¿Cuántas barreras hay que trascender para amar así? Jesús sabía que su camino profético conducía a la muerte, víctima del odio, la injusticia, la maldad. Si no era Judas, sería otro el que lo llevaría a sus enemigos. La maldad no necesita de muchas artimañas para lograr sus propósitos. Sin embargo, Jesús se conmueve, sabe que Judas, su discípulo, aún no ha aprendido nada. Sabe que es víctima de la ambición, la falta de sentido, la falta de Dios. Judas traiciona a su Maestro, traiciona a Dios, se traiciona a sí mismo. Jesús se conmueve ante la traición, porque sabe que Judas no goza de la libertad que él experimenta, la libertad de ser consecuente con lo que piensa, la libertad de ir hasta las últimas consecuencias en fidelidad al proyecto de Dios, la libertad de saber que con la muerte no lo matan, la libertad de resucitar. Hoy también Jesús se conmueve ante la traición.

Oración: Señor, sé que a veces me miras y suspiras, también conmocionado. Perdóname y fortaléceme para seguirte y serte fiel bajo cualquier circunstancia. Amén.
