MAUNDY THURSDAY

LESSON OF LOVE

JOHN 13:1-20

very truly I tell you,

whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me;

and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.

John 13:20

Recently I saw a documentary about a group of Mexican women called Las Patronas (the Patronesses). These women have fed many Central American emigrants for more than 20 years. They voluntarily prepare food and bottles of water, and throw it on a freight train that crosses the border towards the United States. I felt moved thinking that this was one of the few meals the emigrants received during their torturous trip. I remembered the last lesson of love our teacher gave us, sharing the food around the table, the same act we celebrate this Maundy Thursday

These women, with a gesture of love, maintain their commitment to feed and care for families who embark on a difficult trip fraught with many vulnerabilities. Charity and mercy give reason to their lives. Jesus calls us to serve, to love without limits, to transcend the barriers of incomprehension and alienation. Let us respond to this call as did Las Patronas de México. Let us recognize the needs around us and act accordingly. Let us add timely gestures of solidarity and service to our prayers this Holy Week. Surely, we will find many extended hands needing the love of Christ that we can offer.

Prayer: Our Father, we give you thanks for your love. We humbly ask that you forgive our apathy. Let us be attentive to the small and delicate voice, and to complete our mission as your disciples, loving and serving our fellow man. In the name of Jesus, master and servant, Amen.

LECCIÓN DE AMOR

JUAN 13:1-20

Les aseguro que el que recibe al que yo envío, me recibe a mí; y el que me recibe a mí, recibe al que me ha enviado

Recientemente vi un documental sobre un grupo de mujeres mejicanas a las que le llaman Las Patronas. Estas  mujeres han alimentado a muchos emigrantes centroamericanos por más de veinte años. Ellas voluntariamente preparan comidas y pomos de agua y lo arrojan a un tren de carga que cruza la frontera hacia los Estados Unidos. Al pensar que esta es una de las pocas comidas que reciben los emigrantes en su tortuoso viaje me sentí conmovida. Recordé la última lección de amor que nos dejó el maestro, compartiendo los alimentos alrededor de la mesa y que celebramos en este jueves santo. Estas mujeres, en un gesto de amor, mantienen su compromiso de alimentar y cuidar a familias que en condiciones de vulnerabilidad se lanzan a un viaje  difícil. La caridad y la misericordia constituyen el sentido de sus vidas. Jesús nos llama a servir, a amar sin límites, a traspasar las barreras de la incomprensión y el desamor. Respondamos a ese llamado como lo han hecho Las Patronas de México, reconozcamos las necesidades de nuestro contexto y actuemos, acompañemos nuestras oraciones en esta Semana Santa con gestos oportunos de solidaridad y servicio. Seguramente encontremos muchas manos extendidas necesitadas del amor de Cristo, que nosotros podemos ofrecer.

Oración: Padre nuestro, te damos gracias por tu amor. Humildemente te suplicamos que perdones nuestra apatía. Permítenos estar atentos al silbo apacible y delicado, y cumplir nuestra misión como discípulos tuyos, amando y sirviendo a nuestros semejantes. En el nombre de Jesús, maestro y siervo. Amén.
