PALM SUNDAY, THE BEGINNING OF HOLY WEEK

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY

JOHN 12:12-19

The Pharisees then said to one another,

"You see, you can do nothing.

Look, the world has gone after him!"

Today begins Holy Week with what is called the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It turns out to be interesting when we notice that the modifying word triumphal doesn’t appear in the Evangelist’s text. Immediately it would be worth asking ourselves why the modifier exists. For what triumph was Jesus to be received into the holy city with cheers and delight?

Triumph over the plans to derail his movement. Triumph over the pretense that Jerusalem would not pay homage to him. Triumph over the Pharisees who couldn’t tolerate such a message of liberation and justice. The text tells us that the multitudes acclaimed him, received him as a king.  Jesus was already a figure who was impossible to stop, to hide, to cancel out. Jesus triumphed over the religious mediocrity of his time.

But even more, Jesus triumphed over the temptation to corrupt himself with fame or power. Let’s ponder our own entries – into the church, into a new school, a new job, a new group or place. Are our entries triumphal? Is our witness motivated by praise and cheer; are we able to resist the temptations we experience every day over the abuse of power, about inconsistency between what we say and what we do, and so on?  Today is a day to let us be challenged by this triumph which has nothing to do with pomp and superficiality but with a genuine testimony of communion with God.

Prayer: Lord, we want your message to triumph in our lives, and for it to penetrate so deeply that we are able to follow you to Jerusalem, to Galilee, and to the ends of the earth. Amen.

Pero los fariseos se decían unos a otros:

-Ya ven ustedes que así no vamos a conseguir nada.

Miren, ¡todo el mundo se va con él!

Hoy comienza la Semana Santa, con la llamada entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén. Resulta interesante notar que el calificativo de triunfal no aparece en los textos del evangelio. Así que valdría preguntarnos ¿por qué este calificativo? ¿Sobre qué triunfa Jesús al ser recibido con vítores y glorias en la ciudad santa?

Triunfa sobre las intenciones de detener su movimiento. Triunfa sobre la pretensión de que Jerusalén no le rindiera honor. Triunfa sobre los fariseos, que no podían soportar tal mensaje de liberación y justicia. El texto nos cuenta que las multitudes lo aclamaron, lo recibieron como a un rey. Jesús era ya una figura imposible de detener, ocultar, anular. Jesús triunfó sobre la mediocridad religiosa de su tiempo.

Pero también Jesús triunfó sobre la tentación de corromperse por la fama o la autoridad. Pensemos en nuestras propias entradas a la iglesia, a una nueva escuela, a un nuevo trabajo, a un nuevo grupo o lugar. ¿Son las nuestras entradas triunfales? Es nuestro testimonio motivo de aclamación y alegría, somos capaces de resistir las tentaciones que  vivimos a diario de abuso de poder, incoherencias entre lo que decimos y hacemos, etc. Hoy es un día para dejarnos desafiar por este triunfo que nada tiene que ver con la pompa y la superficialidad, sino con un testimonio genuino de comunión con Dios.

Oración: Señor, queremos que tu mensaje triunfe en nuestras vidas, y que cale hondo para que seamos capaces de seguirte a Jerusalén, a Galilea y hasta los confines de la tierra. Amén.
