“SPENDING LIFE”

Matthew 16:25

Those who find their lives will lose them,

and those who lose their lives because of me will find them.

Matthew 10:39 (CEB)

We spend a lot of time in our lives trying to find success, to be comfortable, to accumulate possessions, in short, seeking futile things. We don’t realize that life is passing by while we miss marvelous details and sacred messages that God sends us every day. 

In today’s text, Jesus invites us to change our lives in order to fill them with meaning and commitment to the gospel. 

The Jesuit author Luís Espinal expresses it well in these verses:  …we are afraid to spend life. But you have given us life to live with meaning, to spend it; to give it to others, not to be saved in sterile selfishness. Spending your life is working for others, even without pay, doing a favor even though it cannot be returned; spending your life is launching yourself even through failure, if need be, without pretense; it is to burn the ships for the good of the neighbor…To spend life is not to do it with superficiality and false theatricality. Spending life is not done superficially or with false publicity. It is done simply, without fanfare, like the water running down a slope, like the mother gives her breast to her child, like the humble sweat of the sower.

Prayer:  Help us, Lord, to “spend life,” offering it in service to our neighbor. May we devote our efforts to you and bless you. Amen.

“GASTAR LA VIDA”

MATEO 16:25

El que halla su vida, la perderá; y el que pierde su vida

por causa de mí, la hallará

Mateo 10:39

Pasamos mucho tiempo de nuestras vidas tratando de lograr éxito, de obtener comodidades, posesiones, en fin, tratando de lograr cosas vanas. Así no nos damos cuenta de que la vida va pasando mientras perdemos detalles maravillosos y mensajes sagrados que Dios nos envía cada día.

En el texto de hoy, Jesús nos invita a revisar nuestras vidas para llenarlas de sentido y compromiso con el evangelio.

El autor jesuita Luis Espinal, lo expresa muy bien en estos versos: ... nos da miedo gastar la vida. Pero la vida tú nos la has dado para vivirla con sentido, para gastarla; para darla a otros, no se la puede economizar en estéril egoísmo. Gastar la vida es trabajar por los demás, aunque no paguen, hacer un favor al que no va a devolverlo; gastar la vida es lanzarse aun al fracaso, si hace falta, sin falsas prudencias; es quemar las naves en bien del prójimo… Gastar la vida no se hace con superficialidad y falsa teatralidad. La vida se da sencillamente, sin publicidad, como el agua de la vertiente, como la madre da el pecho al niño, como el sudor humilde del sembrador.

Oración: Ayúdanos Señor a “gastar la vida” ofreciéndola en servicio al prójimo. Permite que dediquemos nuestros esfuerzos a ti y a bendecirte. Amén.
