ARE YOU HONORABLE?

EXODUS 20:12-17

Honor your father and your mother,

so that you may live long in the land of the Lord your God is giving you. (NIV)

 Honor your father and your mother is a more complicated commandment than it seems. After all, all true honor comes because of being honorable.

When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments he gave the sons the responsibility of honoring their parents. It’s the first of the Ten Commandments with a promise. The sons received the mandate to honor their parents unconditionally. But a more thorough observation reveals that the parents need to fulfill the other nine commandments. If they do so they will really be worthy of said honor.

The challenge for contemporary parents is to live a life worthy of their children’s honor, thereby the sons and daughters will find it easy to honor them.

It’s not always easy, right? Between work and economic problems, disagreement with neighbors, problems in the house, it’s difficult to maintain the norm of being honorable. The key things are diligence, wisdom and motivation. If we take being honorable parents seriously, we will have that objective as the first measure in our minds. When we react to the daily circumstances of life it will then be with the objective of maintaining honorability. Let’s learn to ask ourselves: how can we respond in an honorable way to this situation?

Prayer: Lord, I give you thanks for the opportunity of being a positive influence in the life of my children. Give me wisdom and discipline to make honorable decisions in my life. Amen.

ÉXODO 20:12-17

Honra a tu padre y a tu madre,

para tus días se alarguen en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da.

Éxodo 20:12

Honra a tu padre ya tu madre es un mandamiento más complicado de lo que parece. Después de todo, la verdadera honra viene como resultado de ser honorable.

Cuando Dios le dio los diez mandamientos a Moisés, dio a los hijos la responsabilidad de honrar a sus padres. Es el primero de los diez mandamientos con una promesa. Los hijos recibieron el mandato de honrar a sus padres incondicionalmente; pero una observación  más minuciosa revela que los padres cumplan con los otros nueve mandamientos. Si los hacen serán realmente dignos de dicha honra.

El reto para los padres contemporáneos es vivir una vida que sea digna de la honra de nuestros hijos y que, de este modo, a nuestros hijos les resulte fácil honrarlos.

¿No siempre es fácil verdad? Entre problemas de trabajo, económicos, discusiones con los vecinos, problemas de vivienda, es difícil mantener la norma de ser honorables. Las claves son la diligencia, sabiduría y motivación. Si tomamos en serio ser padres honorables, tendremos ese objetivo como primera medida en nuestra mente. Cuando reaccionamos a las circunstancias diarias de la vida, será pues, con el objetivo de mantener la honorabilidad. Aprenderemos a preguntarnos ¿Cómo podemos responder de manera honorable a esta situación?

Oración: Señor, te doy gracia por la oportunidad de ser una influencia positiva en la vida de mis hijos. Dame sabiduría y disciplina para tomar decisiones honorables en mi vida. Amén.
