BEING HUMBLE

John 13:1-11

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered: “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

John 13:8

Things are what they are. Sometimes a gesture teaches best. And what a gesture in today’s reading! It was a gesture that astonished everybody: a gesture that becomes a double lesson: being humble in serving others and being humble to accept help when we need it. Humble in recognizing our own limitations and weaknesses; and fully realizing them, acting accordingly.

Knowing that he would soon return to God, he continued to show real love for others. Jesus undoubtedly had lots of trust in his disciples, and that is why he taught them until the end. Then one would betray him, and another would deny him. But the lesson was for all, and it continues to be so today.

Some people deemed themselves too important to do humble tasks. And so they should learn the lesson from the greatest: he got down on his knees and washed his followers’ feet.

You can no longer be my follower, said Jesus, if you are not sufficiently humble to let others do something for you. When we learn to receive with gratitude, we can give with joy.

  

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, give me humility. Help me to learn from your humility that as the greatest you made yourself the least. Amen.

SIENDO HUMILDES

JUAN 13:1-11

Pedro le dijo: - No me lavarás los pies jamás.

Jesús le respondió: -Si no te lavo, no tendrás parte conmigo

Las cosas son como son. A veces se enseña mejor con un gesto. ¡Y vaya que gesto el de la lectura de hoy! Fue un gesto que sorprendió a todos.

Gesto que se convierte y transforma en una doble lección al ser humildes en el servicio y al ser humildes en aceptar ayuda cuando la necesitamos. Humildes en reconocer las propias limitaciones, las debilidades; y en pleno conocimiento de esto, obrar en consecuencia.

Sabiendo que volvería a Dios pronto, aun sigue demostrando inmenso amor por los demás. Sin dudas, Jesús tenía mucha confianza en sus discípulos y por eso les enseña hasta el fin. Luego uno lo traicionaría, otro lo negaría. Pero la enseñanza fue sin distinciones, y lo sigue siendo hoy.

Algunas personas se creen demasiado importantes para hacer cosas sencillas. Pues bien, aprendan la lección del más grande: se arrodilló y lavó los pies de sus seguidores.

Ya no podrás ser mi seguidor, dijo Jesús, si no eres suficientemente humilde para aceptar a otros hagan algo por ti, para empezar. Cuando experimentemos recibir con gratitud, podremos dar con alegría.

Oración: Mi buen Señor Jesús, regálame la humildad. Ayúdame a aprender de tu humildad que, siendo el más grande, te hiciste el más pequeño. Amén.
