LIFE IS TODAY

JOHN 17:1-5

Jesus said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son,

that your Son may glorify you.”

John 17:1 (NIV)

When the hour of death arrives, it’s not easy to keep calm. Often we don’t know what to do. We have not learned how to say goodbye when we are about to die, and how to bid farewell to loved ones. Sometimes death comes like a thief in the night: unexpected and with no chance to prepare ourselves. And even when we know that our father or mother is going to die, we try to suppress thinking about their death. Death is so final. Each of us will die someday, but we don’t know when. We plan our lives down to the last details; but it is God who directs and guides us. When we are young, we think about studies, loves, and the future. Later, when children arrive, we work hard and are preoccupied with them. There is always something to do so we don’t have to think that the hour of our death will come.

Life is today. We live now, or never. If we live with that realization, perhaps at the end we could say what Christ said: Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. That would be a death in the confidence that we as Christians are guests on the earth. It is a very great challenge to live as if each day were our last. But at the same time, faith in the resurrection gives us the strength to live calmly in this world, to endure and overcome evil and pain and to enjoy good and happiness.

Prayer:  Father, guide us when we have to face this type of situation. Give us the wisdom to know what to do in these trying moments. Amen.

LA VIDA ES HOY

JUAN 17:1-5

Jesús dijo: “Padre, la hora ha llegado: glorifica a tu Hijo,

para que también te glorifique a ti”

Cuando llega la hora de morir, no es fácil para nosotros quedarnos tranquilos. Muchas veces no sabemos qué hacer. No hemos aprendido bien cómo despedirnos y cómo despedir a los seres queridos. A veces la muerte viene como un ladrón en la noche: sin esperarlo y sin la posibilidad de prepararnos. Y aun sabiendo que nuestro padre o nuestra madre va a morir, tratamos de suprimir todo lo que implica pensar en la muerte. La muerte es el final. Cada uno de nosotros va a morir un día, pero no sabemos en qué momento. Planificamos nuestra vida hasta los más mínimos detalles; pero es Dios quien  nos dirige y  nos guía. Cuando somos jóvenes pensamos en los estudios, los amores y el futuro. Después, cuando llegan los hijos, trabajamos mucho y nos ocupamos de ellos. Siempre hay algo para hacer con tal de no tener que pensar que la hora de la muerte va a llegar.

La vida es hoy. O vivimos ya, o nunca. Si vivimos con esta constancia, al final tal vez podremos decir lo que dijo Cristo: Padre, la hora ha llegado: glorifica a tu Hijo, para que también tu Hijo te glorifique a ti. Eso sería un morir en la confianza de que nosotros, los cristianos y cristianas, somos huéspedes en la tierra. Es un desafío muy grande vivir como si cada día fuese el último. Pero al mismo tiempo, la fe  en la resurrección nos da la fuerza de vivir aquí, en este mundo tranquilamente, soportar y superar el mal y el dolor y disfrutar el bien y la alegría.

Oración:  Padre, guíanos cuando tengamos que enfrentarnos a este tipo de situaciones. Danos la capacidad de saber qué hacer en esos momentos tan difíciles. Amén.
