THE STRENGTH OF
THE “WEAK”
HEBREWS 11:23-31
By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who
were disobedient,
because she had received the spies in peace.

Among the heroes
of the faith that are mentioned in the 11th Chapter of the Letter to
the Hebrews, there appears the name of Rahab, known as a prostitute in Jericho,
who received and protected the spies of Israel, the people of God. It is
striking that a woman of whom tradition says that she exercised this profession
would be an example of faith. It is something unthinkable for our human logic,
but not so for divine logic. The more we dig into the biblical text, the more
we discover that God chooses for his purposes just those that we would not
choose, as is the case with this woman. Possibly we would not choose a woman
who is a prostitute to carry out God’s plan, nor a Moses, a stutterer, nor a
David who practically ordered his opponent’s death, nor a Ruth, a poor woman
and a foreigner.
The Bible is full
of people who are vulnerable like us; and we have many examples of women.
However, God builds from vulnerability. This fact makes us incredibly close to
the biblical characters and breaks down the distance that we sometimes feel
between them and us. They are not perfect people, nor more perfect than we. In
his grace and mercy, God includes us, women and men, as we are, in his divine
plans and makes us participants in the building of his Realm in this world.
Prayer: We give you thanks, Lord God, because what for us are
obstacles, pitfalls, limitations peculiar to our being humans, are rungs for
your work. Amen.

LA FORTALEZA DE “LOS DÉBILES”
HEBREOS 11:23-31
Y por fe, Rahab, la prostituta, no murió junto
con los desobedientes, porque ella había
recibido amistosamente a los espías de Israel.

Entre los héroes de la
fe que se mencionan en el capítulo 11 de la carta a los hebreos, se nombra
también a Rahab, conocida como una prostituta de Jericó que recibió y protegió
a los espías de Israel, el pueblo de Dios. Llama la atención que una mujer de
la cual la tradición dice que ejerció esta profesión sea un ejemplo de fe. Es
algo impensable para nuestra lógica humana, no así para la lógica divina.
Cuanto más nos adentramos en el texto bíblico, más descubrimos que Dios elige
para sus propósitos justamente a aquellos a quienes nosotros no elegiríamos,
como es el caso de esta mujer.
Posiblemente no elegiríamos para llevar a cabo el plan de Dios a una
mujer prostituta, ni a Moisés, un tartamudo, ni a David, un hombre que
prácticamente mandó a matar a su contrincante, ni a Rut, una mujer pobre y
extranjera.
La Biblia está llena de
personajes vulnerables como nosotros; y ejemplos de mujeres tenemos muchos. Sin
embargo, Dios construye a partir de su vulnerabilidad. Este hecho nos hace
increíblemente cercanos a los personajes bíblicos y rompe con la distancia que
a veces sentimos entre ellos y nosotros. No son personas mejores o más
perfectas que nosotros. Dios, a partir de su gracia y misericordia, nos incluye a nosotros, las mujeres y los
hombres, así como somos, en sus planes divinos y nos hace partícipes de la
construcción de su Reino en este mundo.
Oración: Gracias te damos Dios, porque lo que para
nosotros son obstáculos, escollos, limitaciones propias de nuestro ser como
humanos, son peldaños para tu obra. Amén.
