The Unfinished Job
Genesis 1:27-28; 2,8-9
God blessed them, and God said to them,
“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it;
and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and
over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

In the first
creation story, Adam and Eve were called to live from the beginning in an
intimate love relationship with God. But friendship must be cultivated freely
to be accepted; they did not accept being obedient to God; they committed the
sin of separating themselves from God, of turning their backs on a faithful
friend.
Man (ish) and woman (ishah) were created in the image of God, not because they only were
his special creation, but because they had certain characteristics, different
from the other creatures, that permitted them to have a special, personal
relationship with God and therefore exercise administration of the world. Being
the great joy of the Creator, they received the divine blessing to multiply and
populate the earth and the sacred task of watching over the rest of the
creatures. They were beings that could not consider themselves superior but in
brotherly relation in order to grow in love and care.
In the second
account, the human being is formed from the earth and the divine potter blows
the breath of life into him, thus establishing in this way a very close
relationship, which makes him unique in all creation. Then God placed him in
Eden, a special place, a garden of delights, in order to cultivate every type
of tree.
More than twenty
centuries have passed and the first task of subjugating and administering,
which can be perceived negatively, cannot be other than loving, caring and
watching over creation. The human being has his reason for living in creation
and should care for it. When will he complete the task?
Prayer: Beloved father, who created us in your image and likeness,
help us to care for the life which you give and to protect your admirable
creation. Amen.

La tarea inconclusa

Los bendijo Dios
y les dijo: “Fructificad y multiplicaos;
llenad la tierra
y sometedla; ejerced potestad sobre los peces del mar, las aves del cielo y
todas las bestias
que se mueven
sobre la tierra”

En el primer relato de la creación, Adán y Eva fueron
llamados a vivir, desde el principio, en estrecha amistad con Dios. Pero la
amistad debe cultivarse con libertad para la aceptación, ellos no aceptaron
obedecer a Dios y cometieron el pecado de separase de Él, de dar la espalda al
amigo fiel.
Hombre (ish) y hembra (ishah) fueron creados a imagen
de Dios, no porque fueran solamente su creación especial, sino porque tenían
características particulares, diferentes de las otras creaturas, que les
permiten tener una relación especial, personal con Dios y ejercer por lo tanto
la administración del mundo. Fueron el mayor gozo del creador, recibieron la
bendición divina de multiplicarse y llenar el mundo, tenían la sagrada tarea de
dominar el resto de las creaturas. Seres que no podían creerse superiores, sino
en relación fraternal para crecer en amor y cuidados. En el segundo relato, el
ser humano es formado de la tierra, y el divino alfarero sopla aliento de vida
y establece de esta forma una relación muy estrecha con él, que lo hace único
en todo lo creado. Luego lo coloca en el Edén, lugar especial, jardín de las
delicias, para cultivar toda clase de árboles.
Han pasado más de veinte siglos y esa primera tarea de
sojuzgar y señorear, que pudiera parecer negativa, no puede ser otra que amar,
cuidar y administrar la creación. El ser humano tiene su razón de vida en la
creación y debe cuidarla, ¿Cuándo cumplirá la tarea?
Oración: Padre amado, que nos creaste a tu imagen y
semejanza, ayúdanos a cuidar la vida que nos regalas y a proteger tu admirable
creación. Amén.
