A GIVING GOD

1 KINGS 3:3-15

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Solomon had a personal and reciprocal relationship with God, expressed in this passage through his offerings.  Motivated by love, Solomon sacrificed thousands of offerings to the Lord and during that same night, God appeared to the young Solomon in a dream to give him something in return.  And, as the text for today says, “God allows him to choose.” 

Solomon’s answer shows humility.  As a new King who is trying to exercise his rule, he felt young and did not know what to do.  That is why he asked for an understanding heart, which would know the difference between good and evil. 

God, the great giver of gifts, was pleased with Solomon.  This story shows the God’s generosity in that not only did he give Solomon what he asked for, but he gave it in abundance.  Solomon came to be the wisest human being. And God lavished additional gifts of riches and honor upon Solomon. This description of God as the great giver matches other descriptions of his generosity found in the Bible.

The great giver enjoys giving good gifts.  Let us cultivate then those values of humility and genuine love in our relationship with God.  

Prayer:  Thank you God, for your generosity, for being the great giver.  I beseech you to open my eyes to see all of the gifts that you give me daily, which are hard for me to see at times.  Amen.

UN DIOS DADIVOSO

1 REYES 3:3-15

Pues si vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis dar buenas dadivas a vuestros hijos, ¿Cuánto más vuestro Padre que está en los cielos dará buenas cosas a los que le pidan?

Salomón tenía una relación de personal y recíproca con Dios, expresada en este pasaje a través de sus ofrendas. Motivado por amor, Salomón sacrificó miles de ofrendas al Señor y desde aquella misma noche, Dios apareció al joven Salomón en un sueño para darle algo a cambio. Y como dice el texto escogido para hoy, Dios le dejó elegir.

La respuesta de Salomón mostró humildad. Como un rey nuevo que trataba de ejercer su función, se sintió joven y no sabía qué hacer. Por eso le pidió un corazón entendido, que conociera la diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo.

Dios, el gran dador de regalos, estaba complacido con Salomón. Esta historia demuestra la generosidad de Dios en que no sólo dio a Salomón lo que él le pido, sino que también se lo dio en abundancia. Salomón llegó a ser más sabio que cualquier otro ser humano. Y Dios prodigó regalos adicionales de riqueza y honor sobre Salomón. Esta descripción de Dios como el gran dador coincide con otras descripciones de su generosidad encontradas en la Biblia.

Al gran dador le encanta dar buenos regalos. Cultivemos pues estos valores de humildad y amor genuino en nuestra relación con Dios.

Oración: Gracias Dios, por tu generosidad, por ser el gran dador. Te pido abras mis ojos para ver todos los regalos que me haces diariamente y que a veces me cuesta ver. Amén.
