GOD’S TOUCH

GENESIS 32:22-32

… saying, “For I have seen God face to face,

 and yet my life is preserved.”

Genesis 32:30 (NRSV)

Today’s text tells the story of Jacob’s encounter with Esau, the brother from whom he had long ago distanced himself.  Remembering that he had behaved badly to his brother, and fearing Esau’s anger after all this time, Jacob prayed.  While he was praying, a man came and began to wrestle with him.  Recognizing that the stranger was a spiritual presence and a messenger from God, Jacob held onto him and begged him for a blessing.  Sure enough, this mysterious figure blessed Jacob, but first he touched Jacob’s hip and dislocated it while they wrestled.  Jacob understood that he was having an encounter with God.  The next morning, Jacob went away limping, proof that his experience had not been simply a dream.  God had touched him physically and this encounter had been a crucial moment in his life. 

When someone says that they were touched by God, like Jacob, some people will be skeptical, but the biggest skeptics come to be the biggest believers when they personally experience God’s touch.  Since the first century, God has touched thousands of men and women, who have in turn touched others as representatives of Christ.  These people cross our paths many times throughout our life.  They are channels of God’s love and they speak fluently the language of love, of physical contact, through a hug or a pat on the shoulder.  May we learn to recognize them.

Prayer:  Lord, I ask you to speak to me in your language.  Help me to receive love in many and diverse ways, and help me also to express love physically to those around me who need physical contact.  Amen.

EL TOQUE DE DIOS

El texto de hoy relata la historia de Jacob en su rumbo de encontrarse con Esaú, el hermano de quien se había distanciado hacía muchos años. Al recordar que se había comportado mal con su hermano  y por temor a la ira de Esaú después de todo ese tiempo, Jacob oró. Mientras lo hacía, llegó un hombre y comenzó a luchar con él. Al percibir que el extraño era una presencia espiritual y un mensajero de Dios, Jacob se aferró a él y le rogó que lo bendijera. Aquella figura misteriosa, efectivamente bendijo a Jacob, pero primero tocó la cadera de Jacob y la dislocó mientras luchaban. Jacob entendió  que estaba teniendo un encuentro con Dios. A la mañana siguiente Jacob se fue cojeando, prueba de que su experiencia no había sido simplemente un sueño. Dios lo había tocado físicamente y aquel encuentro había sido un momento crucial en su vida.

Cuando alguien dice que Dios lo tocó, como a Jacob, algunos podrían ser escépticos, pero los más grandes escépticos llegan a ser los más grandes creyentes cuando experimentan personalmente el toque de Dios. Desde el primer siglo Dios ha tocado a miles de hombres y mujeres, los cuales a su vez han tocado a otros como representantes de Cristo. Esas personas se cruzan muchas veces en nuestros caminos a lo largo de vida. Son canales del amor de Dios y hablan con fluidez el lenguaje de amor, del contacto físico, a través de un abrazo o una mano en el hombro. Aprendamos a reconocerlas.

Oración: Señor, te pido que me hables en tu lenguaje. Ayúdame a recibir el amor en sus muchas y diversas formas y ayúdame también a expresar amor físicamente a quienes necesitan contacto físico dentro de mi entorno. Amén.
