THE POWER OF PRAYER

MATTHEW 5:43-44

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”

Matthew 5:44

We often ask ourselves what we can do for others, especially for those who have greater needs. It is not a sign of weakness when we say: “We need to pray for one another.”

Praying for others is, above all else, acknowledging in God’s presence that we belong to a family, the family of faith. We are sons and daughters of the same Heavenly Father; we are brothers and sisters, not competitors or rivals.

Prayer, in other words, is listening to the voice of the only one who called us beloved; it is learning that that voice excludes no one.

Praying for our family and friends is sometimes necessary, but when we should express that solidarity for those who have harmed us, it then becomes very complicated. Few are capable of saying as Jesus did: “Father, forgive them, because they don’t know what they are doing.”  And perhaps due to our instinct for survival, we are predisposed to react aggressively towards those who offend us.

But today’s devotional gives us a clear warning.  Wherever I live, God lives with me, and wherever God lives with me, I encounter all of my brothers and sisters.   An intimacy with God and solidarity with all people are two aspects of life which can never be separated.

Prayer: Today I will examine how I am bound by my worldly compulsions; I will name many of them now in my heart. Help me, Lord, to free myself from them so that I can hear your spirit of love. Amen.

EL PODER DE LA ORACIÓN

MATEO 5:43-44

     Amad a vuestros enemigos, haced bien a los que aborrecen

y orad por los que os ultrajan y persiguen

A menudo nos preguntamos qué podemos hacer por los demás, especialmente por los que tienen más necesidad.  No es un signo de impotencia cuando decimos: “debemos orar los unos por los otros”

 Orar por los otros es, primero que todo, reconocer ante la presencia de Dios que pertenecemos a una familia, la familia de la fe. Somos hijos e hijas del mismo Padre Celestial, somos hermanos y hermanas, no competidores o rivales.

Orar, es decir, escuchar la voz del único que nos llama amados, es aprender que esa voz no excluye a nadie.

Orar por nuestros familiares y amigos es en ocasiones una necesidad, pero cuando debemos expresar esa solidaridad por quienes nos han hecho daño, entonces nos resulta muy complicado. Pocos son capaces de decir como Jesús: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”. Y es que, quizás por nuestro instinto de supervivencia, tenemos una predisposición a reaccionar agresivamente ante los que nos ofenden.

Pero la meditación de hoy nos hace una clara advertencia. Donde yo habite, Dios habita conmigo, y donde Dios habite conmigo encuentro a todos mis hermanos y hermanas y así la intimidad con Dios y la solidaridad con todas las personas son dos aspectos del vivir que nunca pueden separarse.

Oración: Hoy examinaré todas mis compulsiones mundanas cómo me aferro a ellas, nombro muchas de ellas en mi corazón ahora. Ayúdame, Señor, a liberarme de ellas para que yo pueda escuchar tu espíritu de amor. Amén.
