 SALT, NOT SALACIÓN*

MATTHEW 5:10-13

                                       

"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Matthew 5:13

 

When we read this affirmation of Jesus it may seem that simply by the act of calling ourselves Christians, we are that salt of which the Teacher spoke. Instead, what we are is a “salación" meaning that we have passed the point of being salt and are no longer competent to fulfill the purpose for which we were called. The verse of a song we love to sing at summer camp says: I am the salt of the earth . . . I am going to give you a taste of Christ.

In short, Jesus confronts us with our responsibility to be consistent with what we say we are; he taught us how through his words and his actions.

We are responsible to give the taste of Christ to this world, but no one can give what he doesn’t have. Perhaps we think we are too few, but remember that salt is used in small portions. Small actions of love can help others to know Christ. Let’s always seek to be the salt that does not lose its taste, bringing the taste of Christ in this earth where God has placed us.

Now and always Jesus tells us: I am the salt of the earth.

Prayer: Father, help us to be salt where we are so that others may know you and follow you. Forgive our irresponsibility when we forget to put the taste of love in all the things of this world. In the name of Jesus, your beloved son, we pray.  Amen.

 SAL, NO SALACIÓN

MATEO  5:10- 13

                                       

Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra; pero si la sal se desvaneciere, ¿con qué  será salada? No sirve  más para nada, sino para ser echada fuera y hollada por los hombres.

Cuando leemos esta afirmación de Jesús puede parecer que, solo por el hecho de nombrarnos cristianos, somos esa sal de la que habló el maestro. En lugar de eso, más bien a veces, lo que somos es una salación, es decir, se nos pasa el punto de sal y no podemos cumplir con el propósito para el cual fuimos llamados. El verso de un canto que nos anima en los campamentos de veranos dice: Yo soy la sal de la tierra… sabor a Cristo te voy a dar.

En breves palabras, Jesús nos coloca de cara a nuestra responsabilidad de ser consecuentes con lo que decimos ser, Él nos lo enseñó de palabra y obra.

Somos responsables de dar el sabor de Cristo a este mundo;  pero nadie puede dar lo que no tiene. Tal vez pensemos que somos pocos, pero recordemos que la sal se usa en pocas porciones. Pequeñas acciones de amor pueden ser efectivas para que otras personas conozcan a Cristo. Busquemos siempre ser esa sal que no pierde su sabor, poniendo el sabor de Cristo en esta tierra donde Dios nos ha colocado.

Aquí y ahora Jesús nos dice: Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra.

Oración: Padre, ayúdanos a ser esa sal allí donde estamos para que otras personas puedan conocerte y seguirte. Perdona nuestra irresponsabilidad cuando dejamos de poner el sabor del amor en todas las cosas de este mundo. Por Jesús, tu hijo amado, te lo imploramos. Amén.
