DEAF EARS TO FOOLISH WORDS

LUKE 6:43-45

for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

Luke 6:45

A group of frogs was traveling through the forest when, all of a sudden, two of them fell into a deep well. The others gathered around the hole and when they saw how deep it was they said to those who had fallen in that they would have to be given up for dead. Nevertheless, the two kept trying to escape with all their might, but the others mocked them, telling them that their efforts would be in vain.

Finally, one of the two listened to what the others were saying, and it gave up and died. The other one continued jumping with all the strength it could muster. The crowd kept shouting that it was impossible for him, but the frog continued to jump, each time with more vigor, until it finally got out of the hole.

The others asked him, “Didn’t you hear what we were telling you?” The little frog said he couldn’t hear them very well and that he thought they were cheering him on from up there to try harder to escape from the hole.

Consider how words have the power of life or death. Anyone can say words that rob others of the spirit to carry on and struggle, or one can say words which encourage people to get up and continue on. This is why we should take care what we say and, more importantly, take special care when choosing the words to which we pay attention.

Prayer: Jesus, grant that my words help other people in their determination to live, that they may cheer, uplift and encourage. Give me wisdom when I speak. Amen.

Porque de la abundancia del corazón habla la boca

Lucas 6:45

Un grupo de ranas viajaba por el bosque, cuando de repente dos de ellas cayeron en un pozo profundo. Las demás se reunieron alrededor del agujero y cuando vieron lo hondo que era, le dijeron a las caídas que debían darse por muertas. Sin embargo, ellas seguían tratando de salir del hoyo con todas sus fuerzas. Las otras les decían que esos esfuerzos serían inútiles.

Finalmente, una de las ranas atendió a lo que las demás decían, se dio por vencida y murió. La otra continuó saltando con tanto esfuerzo como le era posible. La multitud le gritaba que le era imposible, pero la rana seguía saltando cada vez con más fuerza, hasta que finalmente salió del hoyo. Las otras le preguntaron: “¿No escuchabas lo que te decíamos?” La ranita les explicó que no escuchaba bien y que creía que las demás la estaban animando desde el borde a esforzarse para salir del hueco.

Piensa que las palabras tienen poder de vida o muerte. Cualquiera puede decir palabras que le roben a los demás todo el ánimo de continuar y luchar; o puede decir palabras que ayuden a levantarse y continuar. Por eso tengamos presente lo que hablamos y sobre todo tengamos más cuidado a qué palabras le prestamos atención.

Oración : Jesús, permite que mis palabras ayuden a otras personas en sus empeños de vivir, que pueda animar, sostener y estimular. Dame sabiduría al hablar. Amén.
