TO BE LIKE LYDIA

But I have this against you:

I imagine that you may ask yourself: “What does that fragment of text from Acts have to do with the cited text from Revelation?” The first answer is obvious-- both are related to Thyatira.  Lydia, the seller of purple cloth, was from Thyatira and the text from Revelation is the message to the church of Thyatira. This slight connection has made way for an interpretation that I consider abominable.  I just read a reflection that identified Lydia with Jezebel, the symbol of corruption in the community, turning her from a heroine of the faith into the worst of examples.

We should not be surprised at situations like this, where one manipulates Holy Scripture to take away the prominence of prominent and exemplary women like Lydia. We should be diligent in our readings to recognize when the expressed opinions correspond to exclusive, male chauvinistic or racist interests… Lydia is a magnificent example of a woman who takes action, who is open to the Gospel, is a multiplier of the faith, and who responds with concrete gestures of hospitality to the good news of Christ. 

Let us meditate today: what manipulations of the truth do I have to confront? What type of example of women like Lydia should be followed and defended like undeniable references of faith in and commitment to the reign of God?

Prayer:  Our God, thank you for examples like Lydia. Permit us to discern which is your will in this time so we can respond as she did to your call. Amen.

HECHOS 16:13-15

Pero tengo algunas cosas contra ti: Tú toleras a Jezabel…

Imagino que usted se preguntará ahora ¿qué tiene que ver el fragmento de texto leído en Hechos con el texto de Apocalipsis citado? La primera respuesta es evidente, ambos se relacionan con Tiatira: Lidia, la vendedora de telas de púrpura, era de Tiatira, y el texto de Apocalipsis es el mensaje a la Iglesia de Tiatira. Este vínculo tan leve ha dado lugar a una interpretación que considero abominable. Acabo de leer una reflexión en la que se identifica a Lidia como la Jezabel símbolo de la corrupción de una comunidad, convirtiendo a una heroína de la fe en el peor de los ejemplos.

No nos podemos sorprender ante situaciones como esta, en la que se manipula la Sagrada Escritura para quitar protagonismo a mujeres prominentes y ejemplares como Lidia. Debemos ser agudos en nuestras lecturas para reconocer cuándo las opiniones expresadas responden a intereses excluyentes, machistas, racistas… Lidia es un magnífico ejemplo de mujer hacendosa, abierta al evangelio, multiplicadora de la fe, que responde con gestos concretos de hospitalidad ante la buena noticia de Jesucristo.

En el día de hoy meditemos: ¿a qué manipulaciones de la verdad me tengo que enfrentar? ¿De qué manera el ejemplo de mujeres como Lidia debe ser seguido y defendido como referentes innegables de fe y compromiso con el reinado de Dios?

Oración: Dios nuestro, gracias por los ejemplos como el de Lidia. Permítenos discernir cuál es tu voluntad en este tiempo para responder como ella a tu llamado. Amén.
