THE CHAFFE AND THE WHEAT

MATTHEW 13:24-30

Let both grow together until the harvest.

At that time I will tell the harvesters:

“First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned;

then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn. (NIV)

When I read this passage, I think of the times we concentrate on judging people, not on negative qualities. On occasion we are also very severe with our criticisms towards some people of the community, and by contrast, to others whom we exonerate from all blame or responsibility because they are our friends, or for the positions that they hold, or for their family ancestry. It’s as if they had a pedigree.

It’s not because of an attitude of extreme permissiveness that we don’t bring ourselves to firm action before wrongdoing - fortunately divine criteria are another thing. God loves everyone and judges wrongful attitudes, not the appearance of a person. God does not separate us into sides of “good and bad.” The grain and the weeds grow together and it’s necessary to wait a prudent time to cut the weeds, so as not to lose the grain also.

Only God can give us the wisdom to do what is right and to make correct decisions in the community. Let’s ask that he might accompany us in this effort. Let’s quit judging people and dividing the community with our preconceptions. Let’s tackle negative attitudes at the timely moment.

Prayer: God of goodness, we ask that you forgive us for those we have offended with our attitude or word. Help us not to judge people, rather to position ourselves firmly before negative attitudes, guided by your Spirit. Amen.

LA CIZAÑA Y EL TRIGO

MATEO 13:24-30

Dejen que crezcan lo uno y lo otro hasta la cosecha. Cuando

llegue el momento de cosechar, yo les diré a los segadores que recojan primero la cizaña y la aten en manojos, para quemarla,

y que después guarden el trigo en mi granero.

Cuando leo este pasaje pienso en las veces en las que nos concentramos en juzgar a las personas y no a las aptitudes negativas.

En ocasiones incluso somos muy severos en nuestras críticas hacia algunas personas de la comunidad y en cambio a otras las liberamos de toda culpa o responsabilidad porque son nuestros amigos, o por el cargo que ostentan, o por su abolengo familiar. Es como si tuvieran un pedigrí.

No se trata de una actitud de permisividad extrema que no nos lleve a la acción firme frente al mal, pero afortunadamente los criterios divinos son otros. Dios nos ama a todos y juzga las malas actitudes, no a la persona en su apariencia. Dios no nos separa en bandos de “buenos y malos”. El trigo y la cizaña crecen juntos y hay que esperar el tiempo prudente para cortar la cizaña, no sea que se pierda el trigo también.

Solo Dios puede darnos la sabiduría para hacer lo correcto y tomar decisiones acertadas en la comunidad. Pidamos que nos acompañe en este empeño. Dejemos de juzgar a las personas, y dividir a la comunidad con nuestros preconceptos. Ataquemos las actitudes negativas en el momento oportuno.

Oración : Dios de bondad, te pedimos que nos perdones por los que hemos ofendido con nuestra actitud o palabra. Ayúdanos a no juzgar a las personas, sino a posicionarnos con firmeza frente a las actitudes negativas, guiados por tu Espíritu. Amén.
