LYING AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

EPHESIANS 4:21-27

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully

to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

Ephesians 4:25

An old woman that I loved like my own grandmother, used to tell me when I lied as a little girl: “Your eyes become round and one can see that you’re not telling the truth.” The last time I heard that phrase I was a grown woman, and she said it a few days before her death, when she asked me what the doctor had said about her prognosis.

I have a friend who says jokingly that lies are “humanly inherited” because in one way or another nearly everybody tells them.

Lying certainly does not lead to anything positive. At the very least, others may doubt us and ignore us. In the worst case scenario, a lie can have serious consequences, like the breakup of a family or community. Let us reject lying and deceit.

As Christ’s followers, we must strive to be firm and truthful in our speech.

Prayer: Lord, enable us to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Help us to be truthful and reject lies in our human relationships. May we always tell the truth, no matter how hard it may be! In your name we pray, amen.

LA MENTIRA Y SUS CONSECUENCIAS

EFESIOS 4:21-27

Por lo cual, desechando la mentira, hablad verdad cada uno

con su prójimo; porque somos miembros los unos de los otros.

Efesios 4:25

Una anciana a la que quise como si fuera mi abuela, solía decirme cuando yo era niña y decía alguna mentira: “Se te ponen los ojitos redondos y se sabe que no estás diciendo la verdad”. La última vez que le oí esa frase, era yo una mujer, y la pronunció días antes de su muerte, cuando me preguntó qué decía el médico sobre su estado de salud.

Tengo un amigo que en broma afirma que las mentiras son “patrimonio de la humanidad”, porque  de una forma u otra, casi todo el mundo las dice.

Lo cierto es que mentir no conduce a nada positivo. Cuando menos daño hace, los demás pueden dudar de nosotros y no tomarnos en cuenta. En el peor de los casos, una mentira puede traer graves consecuencias, como la desunión de la familia o la comunidad.  Desechemos la mentira y el engaño.

Como seguidores de Cristo, debemos esforzarnos por ser firmes y veraces en nuestro hablar.

Oración: Permítenos Señor, ser luz del mundo y sal de la tierra. Ayúdanos a ser veraces y a desechar la mentira en nuestras relaciones humanas. ¡Qué siempre podamos decir la verdad por dura que sea! En tu nombre oramos, amén.
