ESTHER, THE QUEEN

ESTHER 4:13-17

The book of Esther has two interesting characteristics. It has the longest verse of the Bible (8:9), and in the same verse the name of God does not appear even a single time. Nevertheless, in this story the action of God toward his people is made palpable through a beautiful and courageous woman, Esther. She was born in the breast of a Hebrew family that didn’t return to Judea after Ciro’s permission. Her parents died in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai took charge of her education. After divorcing Vashti, the king, Ahasuerus of Persia, chose Esther as queen. Because Esther won favor from those who saw her.

Because of a scheme led by Haman, an enemy of the Jews, the king signed a decree to exterminate all the Jews, unaware that the queen belonged to this people. Mordecai asks Esther to intervene before the king in favor of his people. And she, brave and determined, does so, even knowing the implied danger it entailed by stating, “If I perish, may I perish.”

By her intervention her people are saved, and Haman is punished. The Jewish festival of Purim still celebrates this deed that was begun at that time. History shows us what a person acting on behalf of his people, who puts himself in the hands of God is capable of accomplishing.     

Prayer:  God, may all your sons and daughters be able to bravely act on behalf of your people. Amen.

El libro de Esther tiene dos características interesantes: tiene el versículo más largo de la Biblia (8:9) y en el mismo no aparece ni una sola vez el nombre de Dios. Sin embargo, en esta historia se hace palpable la acción de Dios a favor de su pueblo a través de una bella y valerosa mujer: Esther. Ella nació en el seno de una familia hebrea que no volvió a Judea después del permiso dado por Ciro. Sus padres murieron en Persia y su prima Mardequea se hizo cargo de su educación. El Rey Asuero, de Persia, después que se divorció de Vasti, eligió a Esther como reina, pues Ganaba Esther el favor de todos los que la veían.

A causa de un complot dirigido por Aman, enemigo de los judíos, el rey firma un decreto para exterminar a todos los judíos, desconociendo que la reina pertenecía a este pueblo. Mardoqueo pide a Esther que intervenga delante del rey en favor de su pueblo, y ella, valiente y decidida, lo hace, aun conociendo el peligro que ello implicaba afirmando que: si perezco, que perezca. Por su intervención su pueblo es salvado y Aman castigado. Este hecho se celebra todavía por los judíos en la festividad llamada Purim, instituida en aquel tiempo. La historia nos muestra lo que es capaz de hacer una persona que se pone en las manos de Dios para actuar en favor de su pueblo.

Oración: Permite Dios, que todos tus hijos e hijas podamos actuar valerosamente en favor de tu pueblo. Amén.
