Reading this
portion of the letter of Paul to Timothy moves me with deep compassion. It is one of those texts that we can pass
over inadvertently before such greatness of the ethics and theology of the rest
of the letter. Nevertheless, it is
glorious to recognize how the apostle developed his work amid great trials. The mood we notice is one of great disillusionment
and helplessness in the face of abandonment, or if you will, betrayal, by some
of his companions in ministry. Nevertheless,
nothing of this kept Paul back, rather it serves as an experience to
share.
The seed of the gospel
should be sown many times in difficult fields beneath many hostile situations,
among them, our own physical or spiritual situation. But this is when examples such as that of
Paul become most pertinent: keep at the task of preaching and teaching, living
the Gospel in a genuine way. We should respond to evil with blessings, with
our prayers that there will be a change in those who betray, oppress, are lazy
or petty regarding the needs of the stranger.
It is not anything easy, but it is the price that we must pay as
followers of Jesus.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for
the teachings of Paul. Allow us to be able to draw near to his example of life
with passion and compassion, without letting obstacles get in our way--in
developing his ministry he humbled himself to be closer to you. Allow us to preach your gospel in all places
and all times, despite the stumbles and barriers that attempt to detain us. Amen.

Leer este fragmento de la carta de Pablo a Timoteo me mueve a profunda
compasión. Es uno de esos textos que pueden pasar inadvertidos ante tanta
grandeza ética y teológica del resto de la carta. Sin embargo, es grandioso
reconocer cómo el apóstol desarrollaba su labor en medio de grandes contiendas.
El estado de ánimo que notamos es de gran decepción y desamparo ante el
abandono, o si se quiere, traición, de algunos de los compañeros de ministerio.
Sin embargo, nada de esto detiene a Pablo, más bien le sirve de experiencia
para transmitirla.
La
semilla del evangelio debe ser sembrada muchas veces en campos difíciles bajo
muchas situaciones hostiles, entre ellas, nuestra propia situación anímica o
espiritual. Pero es entonces cuando ejemplos como el de Pablo se hacen más
pertinentes: persistir en la tarea, predicar y enseñar, vivir el Evangelio de
forma genuina. Debemos responder al mal con bendiciones, y con nuestras
oraciones para que exista un cambio en aquellos que traicionan, que oprimen,
que son indolentes o mezquinos ante la necesidad ajena. No es nada fácil, pero
es un precio que tenemos que asumir como seguidores de Jesús.
Oración:
Gracias, Dios, por las enseñanzas de Pablo, permite que podamos acercarnos a su
ejemplo de vida con pasión y compasión, sin importar obstáculos; al desarrollar
su ministerio se humilló para ser más cercano a ti. Permítenos predicar tu
evangelio en todo lugar y todo tiempo, más allá de los tropiezos y barreras que
pretendan detenernos. Amén.
