      MARY: AN EXAMPLE FOR OUR FAITH

LUKE  1: 26-38

     “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”

                                                               Luke  1: 28b (NRSV)

    It’s not very common in our tradition to speak of the biblical person Mary of Nazareth.  If we do, we do so in relation to her role in the birth of Jesus. And it is true that Mary fulfills the role of woman by being chosen to be the mother of Jesus. However, have we ever wondered why it was she and not another woman? 
 
    I believe the fact that Mary gladly accepts the communication that the angel gave her, has to do with the woman she was. She wasn't a woman waiting for things to be told to her without questioning, and as the angel speaks more, she wonders even more: How can all this happen? Her questions led her to say yes to God, and make us consider her as a woman of faith who guided Jesus in an environment where asking questions certainly helped her to live more cloesly with God.

Prayer: Eternal God, thank you that in your great mystery you choose people to perform certain tasks, and become an example for our faith. Thank you because today there are women like Mary who help us to grow in faith, with their yes to you. Amen.

Hablar sobre el personaje bíblico de María de Nazaret no es muy común en nuestra tradición. Si lo hacemos lo hacemos en relación a su rol en el nacimiento de Jesús. Y es verdad que María cumple el rol de mujer al ser escogida para ser la madre de Jesús. Sin embargo, nos hemos preguntado alguna vez ¿por qué ha sido ella y no otra mujer?
Creo que al María aceptar con gusto la comunicación que el ángel le dio, tiene que ver con la mujer que ella fue. No fue una mujer que se queda esperando a que le digan las cosas sin preguntarse, y en la medida que el ángel habla más, se pregunta aún más: ¿Cómo podrá suceder todo eso?
Sus preguntas la llevaron a darle un sí a Dios, y nos hacen pensar en ella como una mujer de fe que guió  a Jesús en un ambiente donde seguramente hacer preguntas le ayudaron a vivir más cerca de Dios.

Oración: Dios eterno, gracias porque en tu gran misterio escoges a las personas para desarrollar tareas determinadas, y porque son ejemplo para nuestra fe. Gracias porque hoy hay mujeres como María que nos ayudan, con su sí a ti, a crecer en fe. Amén.
