THE BIRTH OF OUR LORD

MATTHEW 1:18-25

“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,

 and they shall name him Emmanuel,”

Matthew 1:23 (NRSV)

    Mary and Joseph made a journey of faith with doubts, conflicts and tensions, but they trusted in God's plans. By accepting Jesus after the angel's announcement to Mary, they accept both the life and the God of the life that that child gave them. That was an act of faith and hope, facilitated by the affection that the two had for each other. Some seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah, in an unfavorable situation, proclaimed that the virgin would name her son Emmanuel, which means God with us. This implies that the God of life is present in our reality in the person of his Son.

    Our context today is not different from that of the prophet. The contemporary world lives in shadows. Every day, the separation of rich from poor increases; daily the poor become poorer and the rich richer, and misery grows. The arms race and military costs increase in a unipolar world. Trafficing of narcotics, children and women for prostitution grows. Morever, the situation in our country is difficult, because of material limitations and a crisis of values. In the face of this world in “darkness”, the “Prince of Peace” is born. That is why today, more than ever, the message that the angels transmitted to the shepherds is fully valid: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!”

Prayer: Lord, allow this message of the Nativity to include us in celebrating your coming with joy by being protagonists of your preaching and practice. Bless this Christmas abundantly. Amen.

LA NATIVIDAD DE NUESTRO SEÑOR

MATEO 1:18-25

La virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamarán

Emanuel»   (que significa «Dios con nosotros»)

María y José hicieron un camino de fe con dudas, conflictos y tensiones, pero confiaron en los designios de Dios. Al aceptar a Jesús tras el anuncio del  ángel a María, los dos aceptan la vida y al Dios de la vida que les regalaba aquel niño. Aquel fue un acto de fe y de esperanza, facilitado por el cariño que los dos se tenían. Unos setecientos años antes del nacimiento de Jesús, el profeta Isaías en una situación desventajosa, anunciaba que la virgen llamará Emmanuel a su hijo, que significa Dios con nosotros. Lo cual implica que el Dios de la vida está presente en nuestra realidad en la persona de su Hijo.
Nuestro contexto de hoy no es distinto al del profeta. El mundo contemporáneo vive en tinieblas. Cada vez crece más la separación entre ricos y pobres, los pobres son cada vez más pobres y los ricos más ricos, y aumenta  la miseria. La carrera armamentista y los gastos militares aumentan en un mundo unipolar. El tráfico de narcóticos, niños y mujeres para la prostitución se acrecienta. La situación en nuestro país también es difícil. Por las limitaciones materiales y una crisis de valores. Frente a este mundo en “tinieblas” nace el “príncipe de paz”. Por eso hoy más que nunca tiene plena vigencia el mensaje que los ángeles transmitieron a los pastores: ¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra paz, buena voluntad para con los hombres! 

Oración: Señor, permite que este mensaje de la natividad nos invite a celebrar tu advenimiento con alegría para ser protagonistas de tus prédicas y prácticas. Bendice abundantemente estas Navidades. Amén.
