Anniversary of the Sancti Spiritus Church

IMPATIENCE

Luke 24:13-35

But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.

Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place.

Luke 24:21 (NRSV)

            O, the impatience of people! We want everything to happen according to our schedules. We want everything adjusted to meet our parameters, our reason, our way of thinking. As for God and God’s plans . . . ? Just as Jesus’ followers wanted everything to work out according to their needs, so, like them, we want a magical solution to our discomforts.

            We haven’t yet learned that God works in God’s own times. We are tempted by desire for the immediate, and for that reason there are those who resort to vessels of water, light candles or whatever allows them to evade their own need to change in the present and for the future. We place more faith in these externals than in God, hoping for a miracle with the law of least effort and zero commitment.

            We mustn’t forget the preaching of John the Baptist who said that it was necessary to prepare the way to make possible the miracle of salvation. Let’s prepare the way, then, patiently waiting for God’s time.

Prayer: Lord, cure us of the impatience that so damages our spiritual life. Amen.

LA IMPACIENCIA

Lucas 24:13-35

Nosotros esperábamos que él sería el libertador de Israel;

pero a todo esto van tres días que sucedieron estas cosas

Lucas 24:21

            ¡Ay, la impaciencia de los humanos! Siempre queremos que todo suceda según nuestros tiempos. Todo lo queremos ajustar a nuestros parámetros, a nuestra razón, a nuestra manera de pensar. ¿Y Dios y sus planes? Asimismo como los seguidores de Jesús querían que  las cosas sucedieron según sus necesidades, nosotros queremos como ellos la solución mágica a nuestras inquietudes.

            Aun no hemos aprendido que Dios tiene sus propios tiempos.  Nos tienta el deseo de que las cosas sean inmediatas y para ello hay quien recurre a vasitos de agua, velas encendidas, o cualquier elemento que evite poner, desde nosotros mismos, el cambio en este presente y con proyección de futuro. Ponemos  más fe en estos elementos, en lugar de confiar en Dios, esperando el milagro con la ley del menor esfuerzo y cero compromiso.

            No debemos olvidar la predicación de Juan el Bautista que decía que era necesario allanar el camino para hacer posible el milagro de la salvación. Allanemos, pues, el camino con paciencia esperando siempre el tiempo de Dios.

Oración: Cúranos Señor, de la impaciencia que tanto nos hace daño en nuestra vida espiritual. Amén.
