Ascension Sunday

Only Luke narrates what happened with the ascension. In this
Gospel text he presents it in summary. Later, in Acts 1, he leaves some other
interesting clues. Jesus, who had ended his earthly work, said that he must
“leave” his disciples, but without abandoning them.
The text states that the “ascension” occurred when Jesus was
blessing them. Blessing is a term we hear in our churches. Many are accustomed
to say, “God bless you,” but what do we mean by that? Today some of us equate
the sign of blessing with material prosperity, to be blessed would be a synonym
that the riches in glory promised in Christ Jesus are just an abundance of
material goods. Be careful! Jesus warned that life does not consist of the abundance
of possessions (Lk 12: 14). But according to Acts 1: 8, what it was about was
the promise of the Holy Spirit, and not as a guarantee of being able to perform miracles, rather
simply giving the ability for the proclamation of the message. “…you will receive
power, and will be my witnesses…”
Prayer: May we, Lord, upon remembering your ascension, be conscious
of what you expect of us as witnesses of your love and salvation. In Jesus Christ. Amen.

Solo
Lucas narra lo relacionado con la ascensión. En este texto del evangelio lo
presenta de modo muy resumido, luego en Hechos 1 deja algunas otras pistas
interesantes. Jesús que ha terminado su obra terrenal, que debe “dejar” a los
suyos, pero sin abandonarlos.
El
texto nos dice que la “ascensión” ocurre cuando Jesús los bendecía. Bendecir es
un término que escuchamos en nuestras
iglesias, muchos suelen decir “Dios te bendiga”, pero ¿qué queremos significar
con eso? Algunos hoy en día equivalen la señal de la bendición con la
prosperidad material, ser bendecido sería sinónimo de que las riquezas en
gloria prometidas en Cristo Jesús, son justamente abundancia de bienes
materiales. Pero ¡cuidado!, bien alertó Jesús que la vida no consiste en la
abundancia de los bienes que se posea (Lc 12:14).
Pero
según Hechos 1:8, de lo que se trata era de la promesa del Espííritu Santo, y
no como garantía de poder operar milagros sino simplemente dando la capacidad
para la proclamación del mensaje: “...recibirán poder, y serán mis testigos…”
Oración: Permite Señor, que al recordar tu ascensión,
seamos conscientes de lo que tú esperas de nosotros como testigos de tu amor y
tu salvación. En Jesucristo. Amén.
