BLESSED ARE THE POOR

 Matthew 5:1-11

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew  5:3 (NRSV)

            Sometimes I feel that the kingdom that Jesus presents to us is the world upside down. Who is going to be happy by being poor? Is anyone happy when they’re insulted? Can anyone laugh at tears? What, then, do these words of Jesus mean: Blessed are the poor . . . those who hunger . . . those who weep?

            We can’t say that the poor are happy for being poor, nor are they to be envied for being hungry. In many places the gospel urges us to help the poor, to share bread with the hungry, and to lovingly embrace the forlorn.

            In saying blessed are you poor people, Jesus states that a special form of blessing and God’s grace rests on the poor, the hungry, the sad. God is with them and knows their need, their pain, their suffering. In God’s eyes, no one is despised for being poor, nor are riches a sign of blessing. On the contrary, Jesus doesn’t say, “Stop suffering,” but rather says, “You are blest when you suffer, knowing that God is with you.”

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for not deserting us.  Your faithfulness toward us is unending. We ask that we may be your hands to clothe the naked, give bread to the hungry, and console those who suffer. Amen.

DICHOSOS LOS POBRES

 Mateo 5:1-11

Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu,

porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos

Mateo  5:3

            A veces siento que el reino que nos presenta Jesús es el mundo al revés. ¿Quién va a estar contento  por ser pobre? ¿Alguien está feliz cuando lo insultan? ¿Puede uno llorar para reírse? ¿Qué significan entonces  las palabras de Jesús: Dichosos ustedes los pobres… los que tienen hambre...los que lloran?

            No podemos decir que son felices los pobres por ser pobres, tampoco se los puede envidiar por tener hambre. En muchas ocasiones el evangelio nos induce a ayudar a los pobres, a compartir el pan con el hambriento a abrazar con amor al desolado.

            Al decir dichosos ustedes los pobres, Jesús indica que sobre los pobres, los hambrientos, los tristes, descansa de forma especial la bendición  y la gracia de Dios. Dios está con ellos, conoce su necesidad, su dolor, su sufrimiento. No por ser pobre alguien es despreciado por Dios, ni la riqueza es señal de bendición; al contrario, Jesús no dice: Pare de sufrir, más bien dice: Benditos los que sufren, sientan que Dios está con ustedes.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por no desampararnos. Tu fidelidad a nosotros es eterna. Te pedimos que podamos ser tus manos para vestir al desnudo, dar pan al hambriento y consolar a los que sufren. Amén.
