HOSPITALITY AND MERCY 

2 kings 8-16

Let’s make a small room on the roof and put a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.

2 Kings  4:10 (NIV)

The story of the Shunammite and the prophet Elisha is a magnificent example of hospitality and gratitude. Regarding the attitude of the Shunammite let’s take note:

She took the initiative of hospitality without knowing very well who she was receiving. It was her  sensitivity that opened the doors of her  home. This woman, after a while, knew how to recognize in Elisha, a holy man of God. That is, she was attentive to knowing more deeply who she received. Finally, her selfless gesture was crowned by the satisfaction of her much longed dream: to have a child.

We live in a world where distrust and selfishness often prevail over hospitality and mercy. However, this reading reminds us that it is worth being spontaneous in our vocation of service and care, and to promote deep and unsuperficial relationships. Let us open ourselves to the many in need of  welcoming that surround us today. In addition to those who need the most basic things, there are those  in urgent need to be heard and assisted in multiple situations of injustice, misunderstanding, intolerance and violence. Let God guide us to serve and welcome those who need so much. Let us be grateful to Elisha, who responded with a beautiful gesture to those who opened before him. Thus what seems impossible  will be true, and no stumbling block will take away the hope of our lives.

 

Prayer: Good God, allow us to be docile creatures in your hands to express your love through concrete gestures.

HOSPITALIDAD Y MISERICORDIA

2 Reyes 8-16

Debiéramos hacerle un pequeño aposento en la azotea, y poner allí una cama y una mesa, y una silla y un candelero, para que cuando pase por aquí pueda quedarse con nosotros.

2 Reyes 4:10

La historia de la sunamita y el profeta Eliseo es un magnífico ejemplo de hospitalidad y de agradecimiento. Sobre la actitud de la sunamita notemos: tuvo la iniciativa de la hospitalidad sin saber muy bien a quién recibía, fue su sensibilidad quien abrió las puertas de su hogar. Esta mujer, pasado un tiempo, supo reconocer en Eliseo un santo varón de Dios, es decir, estuvo atenta para conocer más profundamente a quien recibía. Por último, su gesto desinteresado estuvo coronado por la satisfacción de su más anhelado sueño: tener un hijo.

Vivimos en un mundo donde a menudo la desconfianza y el egoísmo imperan sobre la hospitalidad y la misericordia. Sin embargo, esta lectura nos recuerda que vale la pena ser espontáneos en nuestra vocación al servicio y el cuidado y, además, promover relaciones profundas y no superficiales. Abrámonos a las muchas necesidades de acogida que hoy nos rodean. Además de los que necesitan lo más elemental, también están quienes les urge ser escuchados y asistidos bajo múltiples situaciones de injusticia, incomprensión, intolerancia, violencia. Dejemos que Dios nos guíe para atender y acoger a quienes tanto lo necesitan. Seamos agradecidos como Eliseo, que respondió con un hermoso gesto al amor que se abría ante él. Así, lo que parece imposible será cierto, y ningún tropiezo quitará la esperanza de nuestras vidas.

Oración: Dios bueno, permite que seamos dóciles criaturas en tus manos para expresar tu amor a través de gestos concretos. Amén.
