Sunday, May 7 KEEP PRAYING BECAUSE GOD IS LISTENING PSALM 102:1-17

Sunday, May 7
KEEP PRAYING BECAUSE
GOD IS LISTENING

PSALM 102:1-17

Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you.
Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress.
Psalm 102:1-2

When my son was little he had the habit of sleeping in my bed until one day I decided to put an end to it. I carried him to his cradle, gave him a kiss, and turned off the light. He began to cry bitterly, believing that I did not hear him or want him. But I was nearby, although hidden in the darkness. My heart was suffering. I wanted to fulfill his desires, but I didn't so that he could grow emotionally.

Each of us has felt at times as if God had turned his back on us, as if we were in periods of darkness and God was asleep and unchanging at our side. But God never draws away from us, and as I did with my son. He is always at our side, suffering together with us but allowing us to grow. Growth is painful, but the result is a life full of meaning together with God and with our families and friends.

Let's not dwell on complaint and suffering. God will reply to our request in his own way and time. Don't give up hope. Keep praying. God is at your side.

Prayer: Unending thanks, God, for all you have given to me. Forgive me when in despair I complain and move away from your hand. Hold me strong, and help me to move forward, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

SIGUE ORANDO PORQUE
DIOS ESTÁ ESCUCHANDO

SALMO 102:1-17

Jehová, escucha mi corazón. No escondas

No te desesperes. Sigue orando.

Sostenme fuerte y ayúdame a seguir adelante. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.

Saturday, May 6 THE SILLY DOVE HOSEA 7:11-16

Saturday, May 6
THE SILLY DOVE
HOSEA 7:11-16

Ephraim has become like a dove, silly and without sense;
they call upon Egypt, they go to Assyria.
Hosea 7:11

When pigeons and doves are frightened, they react with a totally bewildered terror. Perhaps that is the reason that Hosea compares Israel to a silly dove. Although warned by God not to do it, the Israelites embarked upon establishing international alliances, wavering between Egypt and Assyria in pursuit of aid. Their conduct constituted an example of what James expressed later on: they were double-minded (James 1:8). They professed a faith in God, but they pursued idol worship. When they saw the imminent disaster that was coming at the hands of the invading armies, they cried out to God, but they didn't repent of their sins. They returned to the appropriate religious observances, but they did not abandon the practices derived from their pagan neighbors. As a result, they failed to enter into a relationship with God. They had no other recourse than to flee in panic, first to one country and then to the other seeing aid.

Many people today commit the same mistake. They say that they believe in God, but their actions show a great lack of faith and of communion. In anxious times, they cry out to God asking for aid, but at the same time they don't have the patience to wait for answers, and they resort to all sorts of methods, ending up renouncing the presence of God in their lives with such actions. If this describes you, heed the warning. God won't stand for double-mindedness. Decide on unconditional surrender to the Lord. Give yourself wholeheartedly to Christ.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are present in our lives and accompany us in good times and in bad. Amen.

LA PALOMA INCAUTA
OSEAS 7:11-16

Efraín fue como paloma incauta, sin entendimiento.
Oseas 7:11

Friday, May 5 Anniversary of “Gethsemane” Presbyterian-Reformed Church (San José de los Ramos) SPIRITUAL HUNGER PSALM 119:169-176

Friday, May 5
Anniversary of “Gethsemane” Presbyterian-Reformed Church (San José de los Ramos)

SPIRITUAL HUNGER
PSALM 119:169-176

How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Psalm 119:103

Our hearts are broken when we know the devastating effects of  hunger suffered by millions of people around the world. At first the victims experience an insatiable desire for food. But as  time passes, the body weakens, the mind becomes confused and the desire to eat vanishes. Those who are dying of hunger come to a point where they don't even want food when it is placed in front of them.

Spiritual hunger follows a similar course. If we have been fed daily on the Word of God, it is only natural that we feel hungry if we miss our daily time of devotion. But if we continue being  careless about it, we come to a point where we lose all desire to study Scripture. So it's a good thing that we ask ourselves, "How much time did you spend reading the Word of God and meditating on its truths? Do we miss the Word of God when we neglect it?"

I once read the following: "If you discover that you love some pleasure more than your prayers, some book more than the Bible, some person more than Christ . . . be frightened!" If you have lost your taste for the "bread of life," confess your negligence and ask God to enlighten your appetite for his Word. Avoid spiritual hunger.

Prayer: Eternal Father, bestow on us wisdom and help us to use it for your glory. Amen.

HAMBRE ESPIRITUAL
SALMO 119: 169-176

¡Cuan dulces son a mi paladar tus palabras!
Más que la miel a mi boca
Salmo 119

Thursday, May 4 Anniversary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church of Sancti Spíritus THE KING OF OUR LIVES 1 TIMOTHY 6:11-16

Thursday, May 4
Anniversary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church of Sancti Spíritus

THE KING OF OUR LIVES
1 TIMOTHY 6:11-16

I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,
who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 1:8

When we recognize that Christ is our King, we don't do so thinking of the qualities that kings usually show: he is not a despotic king, or violent, or ostentatious, or selfish. But even recognizing him as King does not guarantee that we will enjoy supernatural protection or any other privilege. Affirming Christ's royalty means that we have recognized that he is the Son of God, that he is God himself incarnate, who preached the good news of God without any interest other than establishing a more harmonious and just way of relating to God and our neighbor.

That Christ is King doesn't dim his ignominious death on the cross, although it does remind us that his power transcended death, to remain always at hand as a sign of hope. A Christ King means committing oneself to his work of salvation, not being only a "pew Christian," but taking an active role in the sufferings of the world and giving oneself completely to the service of the neediest.

To say today that Christ is our King means that our life doesn't end with death, but rather that it has a "forever in God." It means not talking about ourselves, because He has become the eternal "I." Finally, to say today that Christ is our King is to love others and Him with the same strength that led him to become a seed of hope on the cross by giving himself up for the love of humanity.

Prayer: Lord, may the strength of your love transform us into better persons and better Christians every day so we can bear witness that Christ is the only King of our lives. Amen.

EL REY DE NUESTRAS VIDAS
1 TIMOTEO 6:11-16

Wednesday, May 3 BY FAITH HEBREWS 11:1-3

Wednesday, May 3

BY FAITH
HEBREWS  11:1-3

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews  11:1

The Bible offers Abraham to us as a model of the man of faith--someone to whom God once said, "Leave your homeland!" and immediately, he set out on the journey. "To leave your homeland" means to tear out by the roots our ordinary manner of thinking and living, to leave behind the plans which we had thought so important, our past and all that moors our body and spirit to go either outward or into ourselves.

"To leave your homeland" means to leap over any set of convictions to dwell in a desert of doubt. Faith is born in complete darkness and grows toward an end which is hidden from sight. Faith lives on a promise that perpetually guarantees hope, that tests realities not visible; that is why there is no need to question anything, to ask for explanations nor to demand guarantees. We only need to place our heart in God's hand as we take each step. And nothing happens if during the journey we falter or fall. What is truly important is to get ourselves up again. The principal indicator of a mature faith is the ability to straighten our knees when we face adversity.

We can act according to the will of God if we empty ourselves of ourselves and fill ourselves with Him and with his Word. Let us open our ears to the Spirit, to listen in the midst of silence to the beating of God's heart next to ours.

Prayer: O God, our God, today we pray like that man of the road, "Help us to have more faith!" Amen.

POR FE
HEBREOS  11:1-3

Tuesday, May 2 You Are the Potter, I Am the Clay GENESIS 2:4-7

Tuesday, May 2
You Are the Potter, I Am the Clay
GENESIS  2:4-7

But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn,
which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
Proverbs 4:18

We live at a dizzying pace. Everything happens fast: fast food, instant coffee, airplanes getting faster . . . . "There's no time to lose!" However, we cannot expect Christian growth and responses to prayer will always come in instantaneous fashion.

Some people expect God to act immediately, as if at the touch of a remote-control button we could receive a response in minutes. "Heal me, Lord." Beep! and you’re already healthy. "Lord, get me a visa." Beep! ready in a few minutes!" Anyone who hopes to find such shortcuts will suffer grave disappointments.

The Christian life is a process of growing. We are born into the Christian life, and continue growing, going through different stages and maturing. God's presence influences and transforms our being, making his character more and more evident in us.

You are growing, perhaps not in the way you had hoped, but have no fear; God knows what he's doing. He is attending to your character, shaping your life, teaching you to live by faith. If you go through trials and if you fail in anything, the loving and patient potter still holds you in  his hands and will not leave you until his work is finished.

Don't be discouraged. Renew your strength! In time you will see the fruits of what has been sown today.

Prayer: Then I felt it: your hands had always shaped me. Amen.

Si alguno espera encontrar semejantes atajos, sufrirá grandes decepciones.
No te desanimes.

Monday, May 1
A DAY FOR GOD
EPHESIANS 3:14-21

my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.
Psalm 84:2

When I opened my eyes this morning, feeling the comfort of my bed and the well-being of my rested body, I raised a prayer of praise and gratitude to God. At that moment, I thought of how many things I had. Were they really mine? Rather they are given by a God with the face of a Father and Mother who love their daughter—a daughter who is sometimes meek and grateful but almost always rebellious and selfish.

In that moment, my body at rest, but my spirit humbled before the Lord, God gave me peace. I received then what was necessary to begin a day full of promise and challenge. My friend was with me, invisible but real. He would go wherever I went, would know what I felt.

A marvelous journey lay before me: God was in my heart, and I was prepared to give because I had already received his strength. Yes, prepared to give to those around me from so much that God had given to me. Otherwise I would be selfish and ungrateful.

I give thanks to my God. In his name, I begin the day for his glory, honoring and serving my neighbors.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings. Fill our hearts and spirits with all your love and strength so that we may share your abundant life with others. Amen.

UN DÍA PARA DIOS
EFESIOS 3:14-21

Mi corazón y mi carne cantan al Dios vivo
Salmo 84:2
