THE SILLY DOVE

HOSEA 7:11-16

Ephraim has become like a dove, silly and without sense;

they call upon Egypt, they go to Assyria.

Hosea 7:11

When pigeons and doves are frightened, they react with a totally bewildered terror. Perhaps that is the reason that Hosea compares Israel to a silly dove. Although warned by God not to do it, the Israelites embarked upon establishing international alliances, wavering between Egypt and Assyria in pursuit of aid. Their conduct constituted an example of what James expressed later on: they were double-minded (James 1:8). They professed a faith in God, but they pursued idol worship. When they saw the imminent disaster that was coming at the hands of the invading armies, they cried out to God, but they didn't repent of their sins. They returned to the appropriate religious observances, but they did not abandon the practices derived from their pagan neighbors. As a result, they failed to enter into a relationship with God. They had no other recourse than to flee in panic, first to one country and then to the other seeing aid.

Many people today commit the same mistake. They say that they believe in God, but their actions show a great lack of faith and of communion. In anxious times, they cry out to God asking for aid, but at the same time they don't have the patience to wait for answers, and they resort to all sorts of methods, ending up renouncing the presence of God in their lives with such actions. If this describes you, heed the warning. God won't stand for double-mindedness. Decide on unconditional surrender to the Lord. Give yourself wholeheartedly to Christ.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are present in our lives and accompany us in good times and in bad. Amen.

Cuando los pichones y las palomas se asustan reaccionan con un terror totalmente atolondrado. Quizás esta sea la razón por la que Oseas comparara a Israel con una paloma incauta. Aunque advertidos por Dios para que no lo hicieran, los israelitas se lanzaron a establecer alianzas internacionales, oscilando entre Egipto y Asiria en pos de auxilio. Su conducta constituyó un ejemplo de la verdad más adelante expresada en Santiago 1:8. eran de doble ánimo. Profesaban su fe en Dios pero seguían adorando ídolos. Cuando vieron lo inminente del desastre que se les avecinaba a manos de los ejércitos invasores, los israelitas clamaron a Yahvé, pero no se arrepintieron de sus pecados. Volvieron a las observancias religiosas apropiadas, pero no dejaron todas las prácticas  recogidas de sus vecinos paganos. Como resultado, no alcanzaron a entrar en  contacto con el Señor. No tuvieron otro recurso que el de huir  llenos de pánico, primero a un país en busca de ayuda y luego a otro.

Muchas personas hoy cometen el mismo error. Dicen que creen en Dios pero sus acciones evidencian gran falta de fe y de comunión. En tiempos de angustia claman a Dios pidiendo socorro, pero al mismo tiempo no tienen la paciencia de esperar respuestas y recurren a todo tipo de métodos, llegando a renunciar con tales acciones la presencia de Dios en sus vidas.  Si esto te describe a ti, sigue la advertencia. Dios no tolerará doblez de ánimo. Decídete, mediante una rendición incondicional al Señor. Entrégate de todo corazón a Cristo.

Oración: Gracias oh Dios, porque tú estás presente en nuestras vidas y nos acompañas en los buenos y los malos tiempos. Amén.
