THE KING OF OUR LIVES

1 TIMOTHY 6:11-16

I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God,

who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 1:8

When we recognize that Christ is our King, we don't do so thinking of the qualities that kings usually show: he is not a despotic king, or violent, or ostentatious, or selfish. But even recognizing him as King does not guarantee that we will enjoy supernatural protection or any other privilege. Affirming Christ's royalty means that we have recognized that he is the Son of God, that he is God himself incarnate, who preached the good news of God without any interest other than establishing a more harmonious and just way of relating to God and our neighbor.

That Christ is King doesn't dim his ignominious death on the cross, although it does remind us that his power transcended death, to remain always at hand as a sign of hope. A Christ King means committing oneself to his work of salvation, not being only a "pew Christian," but taking an active role in the sufferings of the world and giving oneself completely to the service of the neediest.

To say today that Christ is our King means that our life doesn't end with death, but rather that it has a "forever in God." It means not talking about ourselves, because He has become the eternal "I." Finally, to say today that Christ is our King is to love others and Him with the same strength that led him to become a seed of hope on the cross by giving himself up for the love of humanity.

Prayer: Lord, may the strength of your love transform us into better persons and better Christians every day so we can bear witness that Christ is the only King of our lives. Amen.

EL REY DE NUESTRAS VIDAS

1 TIMOTEO 6:11-16

Cuando reconocemos que Cristo es nuestro Rey, no lo estamos haciendo teniendo en mente las cualidades de que los reyes usualmente hacen gala: no es ni un rey despótico, ni violento, ni ostentoso, ni egoísta… Ni siquiera con reconocerlo como Rey nos garantiza que disfrutemos de una protección sobrenatural, ni ningún otro privilegio. Afirmar la realeza de Cristo significa que hemos reconocido que es el Hijo de Dios, que es Dios mismo encarnado, que predicó la buena noticia de Dios sin ningún tipo de interés que no fuera instaurar una manera más armónica y justa de relacionarnos con Dios y con nuestro prójimo. Que Cristo es Rey no opaca su ignominiosa muerte en la cruz, aunque sí nos recuerda que su poder trascendió la muerte para quedar siempre a la mano como signo de esperanza. Un Cristo Rey significa comprometerse con su proyecto de salvación, no ser sólo “cristiano de banco”, sino tomar presencia activa en los sufrimientos del mundo y darse por completo al servicio de los más necesitados.

Decir hoy que Cristo es nuestro Rey significa que nuestra vida no se acaba con la muerte, sino que tiene un “para siempre en Dios”. Significa no hablar de nosotros mismos porque Él pasó a ser el eternamente “Yo”. En fin, decir hoy y siempre que Cristo es nuestro Rey, es amar a los demás y a Él, con la misma fuerza que lo llevó a convertirse en semilla de esperanza en la cruz al entregarse por amor a la humanidad.

Oración: Señor, que la fuerza de tu amor nos transforme en mejores personas y mejores cristianos cada día y podamos dar testimonio de que Cristo es el único Rey de nuestras vidas. Amén.
